Asthma: Is there a cure?

Table of Contents

While asthma has no cure, natural or otherwise, there are many medications and treatments that can help manage the symptoms. This article will cover tips, medications and treatments which can ease the symptoms of asthma. What is asthma? Asthma is a disease in the lungs which causes difficulty breathing. It is not exactly known how the disease comes about, but it can be triggered by respiratory viruses, allergies, medications, emotions, foods, air pollution and more. Asthma attacks happen when there is an obstruction of air flow into the lungs, which causes an inflammatory reaction in the airway. This leads to shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing and an increase in mucus production. Unfortunately, there is no cure,  which is why the aim of treatment is to control the symptoms. Also, since there are many different types of asthma, it seems like there would be a need for numerous cures. Prevention goes a long way in controlling the disease. By staying away from known triggers such as dust mites, cigarette smoke, pet dander, etc, patients can prevent the inflammation which leads to asthma symptoms. There is no cure in sight, but with knowledge and appropriate guidance, almost complete control of the disease can be reached. Asthma medications are generally split up into two types: quick relief medicines and long-term control. Quick relief medications, or rescue medicines, will relieve sudden asthma symptoms whereas long-term control medicines will help reduce inflammation in the airways and prevent symptoms. The medication prescribed will depend on the severity of the asthma and it will be closely monitored to see if it’s the right medication for you in preventing and controlling symptoms. If your symptoms aren’t being controlled, your doctor will change your dosage or medication. Nebulizers Using a nebulizer offers a convenient way to deliver medication, both for adults and children. It is often used when it is difficult to use a regular inhaler or when a larger dose of medication is required. It also allows for a variety of medications to be used both for relief and maintenance. They are available for purchase in home or portable models. Portable nebulizers such as the Aura Nebulizer can be used on the go whenever needed. It works by turning the medication into a thin vapor. The Aura Nebulizer is known for its ability to penetrate the lungs deeper and deliver the medication where it’s most needed. Common asthma medications Ventolin belongs to the ß2-adrenergic agonists class of medications and is used to relax muscles in the airways, therefore increasing air flow into the lungs. It is a rescue inhaler, used when suffering from asthmatic episodes. It is important for asthma sufferers to always have their Ventolin inhaler on hand in case of an attack. The inhaler usually provides relief within 15 minutes. Advair is a combination medicine used to prevent asthma attacks and prevent the worsening of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It works by helping to prevent airway constriction and inflammation. It is not used as a rescue inhaler to treat sudden breathing problems. Spiriva is also a preventative medication used to control asthma and COPD symptoms and reduce the risk of COPD flare-ups. It is not a rescue medication used to treat a sudden breathing problem. It is advised to wash your mouth after taking medication containing steroids so as to prevent fungal infections.   Natural Remedies As mentioned, there is no cure for asthma – natural or otherwise – yet there are natural remedies that you can use to alleviate symptoms. Eucalyptus essential oil can be very effective due to its decongestant properties. Ginger is well-known to naturally treat asthma by reducing airway inflammation and enhancing muscle relaxation. Honey is a great way to reduce asthma symptoms by reducing phlegm in your throat. Eating raw onions helps to clear your air passages due to its anti-inflammatory properties. There are also natural therapies such as guided imagery and biofeedback that can help reduce stress and therefore prevent it triggering asthma symptoms. Diet is another way to alleviate asthma symptoms. Eating foods rich in omega-3 such as mackerel or salmon can be beneficial.   Helpful tips
  • Keep track of your asthma. Keeping a record of your symptoms in a diary will help you see how well your medication is working to control symptoms.
  • Use a peak-flow meter and keep a record of the results. By doing this it can help warn you of an attack if your breathing is getting worse.
  • Regular checkups will help your doctor assess your level of asthma control.
  • Check out a reliable online pharmacy to ensure you are paying a good price for your medications.
As you can see, while asthma cannot be cured, it can be controlled and treated so you can maintain a normal and healthy lifestyle. Following your doctor’s instructions and having regular checkups will ensure that you are using the right medicine for you.
