Ventolin® (called both salbutamol or albuterol) works by relaxing muscles in the airways to improve breathing. It is used to treat bronchospasm (wheezing or shortness of breath) associated with reversible obstructive airway diseases, including asthma.

Nervousness, shaking (tremor), headache, nausea or dizziness may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects. Tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects, including: fast/pounding heartbeat. Get medical help right away if you have any rare but very serious side effects, including: chest pain, irregular heartbeat, rapid breathing, confusion. Rarely this medication has caused severe (rarely fatal) sudden worsening of breathing problems/asthma (paradoxical bronchospasm). If you experience sudden wheezing, get medical help right away. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing. This is not a complete list of possible side effects. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Albuterol (also known as salbutamol) is used to treat wheezing and shortness of breath caused by breathing problems such as asthma. Albuterol belongs to a class of drugs known as bronchodilators. It works in the airways by opening breathing passages and relaxing muscles. Controlling symptoms of breathing problems can decrease time lost from work or school.

  • What are the contraindications for Ventolin inhalation?

Consultation with a prescribing doctor is necessary to determine who should avoid using a Ventolin inhaler. Common contraindications include hyperthyroidism, type 2 diabetes in adults, metabolic ketoacidosis, and excessive body acidity.
  • What happens if you don't rinse your mouth after inhaling a bronchodilator?

It is recommended to rinse the mouth with water and gargle after each dose of the bronchodilator inhaler to prevent hoarseness, mouth infections, or throat irritation.
  • What happens if you stop using bronchodilator inhalers?

Stopping the use of bronchodilator inhalers should only be done under medical advice, and gradually reducing the dosage is typically recommended to avoid withdrawal symptoms such as fatigue, joint pain, nausea, and dizziness.
  • Can I use my Ventolin inhaler before bed?

General advice is to keep an inhaler close at hand, including at the bedside. This is crucial in case of an asthma attack during the night. It is believed that using the inhaler while sitting up helps the medication reach the throat and lungs more efficiently, and it can be used before bedtime to control asthma symptoms. Many users of Ventolin have been advised to use the inhaler just before going to bed, in order to help control asthma at night.
  • How long should you wait to eat or drink after using an inhaler?

Clearing the airways one hour before meals and taking the inhaler before eating is widely recommended for those who frequently experience breathlessness during mealtimes. Eating slowly and sitting up can also reduce pressure on the lungs and promote easier expansion.
