Voltaren®/Betaren® (diclofenac sodium) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that can reduce inflammation, pain, swelling, and joint stiffness caused by arthritis and other conditions.
A type of enzyme called cyclooxygenase (COX) helps create prostaglandins, which are the body’s natural chemicals that promote inflammation. When there are high levels of prostaglandins in an area of the body it becomes inflamed and painful. Diclofenac is a  COX inhibitor that can work to relieve pain and reduce inflammation and swelling.
