Olumiant (generic name: baricitinib) is a Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor prescribed to treat adults with moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who have not responded well enough to or could not tolerate treatment with a tumor necrosis factor (TNF) antagonist. Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) are a first-line treatment that helps prevent joint damage, and this is usually tried first for patients with RA. For patients who either cannot tolerate the side effects of DMARDs or who did not see sufficient improvement from this form of treatment, JAK inhibitors are a new form of DMARD that can be prescribed since they block inflammatory actions from even starting. There are currently no cures for rheumatoid arthritis. The primary aim, for now, is to reduce the pain and swelling and to slow down the progress. JAK inhibitors are the best current treatment for achieving this. In the US, doctors may prescribe Olumiant to treat alopecia areata off-label. The FDA hasn’t approved Olumiant for off-label use in the treatment of alopecia, but it is already widely prescribed and approved in other countries.

Dosage

Olumiant is an oral medication. It must be taken strictly according to the prescription. The tablets come with the manufacturer’s Patient Information sheet. It is essential to read the guide before beginning treatment with baricitinib. Ask a doctor or pharmacist if there are any questions. Olumiant is a tablet to be swallowed once daily, with or without food. It is recommended to take Olumiant at approximately the same time each day. If a scheduled dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as possible, but only if there are at least twelve hours before the next scheduled dose. In the latter case, the dose must be skipped. Do not double dose to make up for a missed one. If it is difficult to swallow the tablet, it can be dissolved in roughly two teaspoonfuls (10 ml) of clean water. After swallowing the mixture, add another 10 ml of water to the glass and swallow.

Olumiant may cause mild side effects, including nausea, headaches, acne, red bumps, or pimples around hair follicles. If these symptoms continue or worsen, discuss with a doctor or pharmacist.

Olumiant has also been reported to cause more severe side effects, such as:

  • hives
  • swelling of the face, eyes, lips, or throat
  • difficulty swallowing or breathing
  • stomach pain, along with fever and diarrhea or constipation
  • shortness of breath, tiredness
  • pale skin

If any of these side effects are noticed, go immediately to a health clinic or emergency room and inform the staff that Olumiant is being taken.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is usually diagnosed based on a person’s symptoms and external signs.

The result of rheumatoid arthritis is inflammation and swelling of affecting joints, most commonly the knees, wrists, and hands on both sides of the body. The signs are warm, swollen, and painful joints in which the lining becomes inflamed, along with thickening of the joint capsule and change to the underlying bone and cartilage. This causes chronic pain and misshapenness. Rheumatoid arthritis can also affect other organs, such as the lungs, heart, and eyes.

Women are about two to three times more likely to suffer from rheumatoid arthritis than men. Symptoms primarily show up in middle age, but in some cases, it can start as early as late puberty.

  • What is the drug Olumiant used for?
Olumiant (baricitinib) is a Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor that is used to treat adults with severe alopecia areata. Baricitinib is also prescribed to treat adult patients with moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who have had an inadequate response to one or more tumor necrosis factor (TNF) blockers.
  • What triggers my alopecia?
It’s not yet fully understood what causes the attack on hair follicles, but it’s believed that both genetic and environmental factors play a role. Research has found that the immune system can mistakenly attack hair follicles, causing inflammation. In some cases, this results in alopecia areata.
  • Why does Olumiant cause weight gain?
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) can cause symptoms such as joint pain and stiffness. Although there is no direct cause of weight gain from baricitinib itself, RA makes it hard to be physically active, which can lead to weight gain.
  • Does Olumiant regrow eyebrows?
Olumiant stimulates scalp hair regrowth and can also produce eyelash and eyebrow hair regrowth.
  • Does Olumiant weaken your immune system?
Taking Olumiant can reduce the ability of the immune system to fight infections. Some of the side effects include tuberculosis (TB), and infections caused by bacteria, fungi, or viruses. Doctors will take these risks into account before prescribing the drug, balancing them against the benefits it gives.
  • What happens when you stop taking baricitinib (Olumiant)?
Treatment with Olumiant should not be changed or stopped except as directed by a doctor. The benefits of treatment should be felt within two to four weeks. If stopped for more than a few weeks, there is a risk that the condition will worsen again.
