Most people who use Elavil do not experience any adverse side effects. Doctors prescribe this medication because they assess the benefits of such treatment outweigh any likely unwanted effects.

Some of the side effects that have been reported include feeling tired or sleepy, shaking hands or other body parts, feeling dizzy, getting headaches, having an irregular, hard, or fast heartbeat, having a dry mouth, constipation, feeling nauseous, sweating a lot, gaining weight, speaking slowly or unclearly, feeling aggressive, and having a stuffy nose.

Not all side effects are listed here. If these or other unlisted symptoms persist or worsen, consult a healthcare provider or pharmacist.

Depression: Symptoms of depression include:

  • Feeling sad, anxious, tired, or empty a lot of the time.
  • Feeling hopeless or pessimistic.
  • Feeling irritable, frustrated, or restless.
  • Feeling guilty, worthless, or helpless.
  • Losing interest or joy in hobbies and activities.
  • Having trouble concentrating, remembering, or deciding.
  • Having trouble sleeping, waking up too early, or oversleeping.
  • Changes in appetite or weight.
  • Physical pains or digestive issues without a clear physical cause.
  • Having thoughts of death or suicide or attempting suicide.

To be diagnosed with depression, a person needs to experience a number of these symptoms most of the day, almost every day, for at least two weeks.

Bedwetting: Bedwetting occurs when someone unintentionally urinates while sleeping. It occurs after the age when staying dry at night is typically expected. A healthcare professional will identify nocturnal enuresis after examining the person and learning about their medical history. The provider may suggest urine, blood, or imaging tests to check if a medical issue is causing the bedwetting.

The medication is sometimes used off-label to help with long-lasting pain and trouble sleeping.

  • Is amitriptyline a sleeping pill?
Amitriptyline belongs to a group of medicines not mainly designed as sleeping pills but can be utilized 'off-label' to address insomnia. This is due to amitriptyline's ability to cause drowsiness.
  • Can you go in the sun on amitriptyline?
This medicine might make a person more sensitive to sunlight. If sunlight exposure is unavoidable, it's recommended to wear protective clothing and apply sunscreen. Avoid using sun lamps or tanning beds.
  • Does amitriptyline make you tired all day?
One downside of taking amitriptyline to help sleep is that it doesn't only make a person sleepy at night. This happens because amitriptyline stays in the body for longer than one might usually sleep. As a result, it can also cause a person to feel tired and groggy during the day.
