Celexa (generic name: citalopram) has been approved to treat depression and panic disorder in adults. Celexa is sold in some countries under different brand names, including Cipramil and Recital. These are the same medication, in a fully bioequivalent form, meaning they contain the same active ingredient and work the same way in the body. It belongs to a well-known class of antidepressants called Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), medications that work by raising the level of a brain chemical called serotonin, which plays a major role in regulating mood.

How does Celexa work?

Celexa works by increasing the amount of a brain chemical called serotonin. Serotonin is a chemical messenger that nerve cells use to send signals to one another, and it has a strong influence on mood, emotion, sleep, and overall mental wellbeing. Disruptions in the serotonin system are considered an important factor in the development of depression and related conditions, and many of the most widely used antidepressant medications today are built around correcting this imbalance. Normally, after serotonin is released by one nerve cell to send a signal to a neighboring cell, it is quickly reabsorbed back into the first cell in a process called reuptake. This reuptake process limits how long the serotonin signal lasts. Celexa works by blocking this reuptake process, which allows more serotonin to remain active in the space between nerve cells for a longer period of time. This sustained increase in available serotonin is believed to help relieve the symptoms of depression and panic disorder over time, although researchers continue to study the exact relationship between serotonin levels and mood. As with other medicines used to treat depression, improvement is not immediate. After starting treatment, it typically takes several weeks before any noticeable benefit is felt. In the early stages of treatment, some patients may experience a temporary increase in feelings of anxiety. This effect generally fades as treatment continues and the body adjusts to the medication.

What is Celexa prescribed for?

Celexa is approved for two main conditions. The first is depression, a condition involving a persistent low mood or loss of interest in activities that lasts most of the day, nearly every day, for an extended period, and causes meaningful disruption to daily functioning, relationships, and work. The second is panic disorder, a condition marked by repeated, sudden episodes of intense fear or discomfort, often accompanied by physical symptoms such as a racing heartbeat, shortness of breath, sweating, or dizziness, even when there is no clear or immediate danger present. Celexa is not recommended for use in children and adolescents under 18 years of age, as the safety and effectiveness of the medication in this age group have not been fully established. Current research on depression and panic disorder treatment can be explored through the National Library of Medicine’s research database. IsraelPharm is a licensed international pharmacy operating under Health Ministry oversight, with all prescriptions dispensed by a licensed pharmacist. Patients who have been prescribed Celexa can source the prescribed product through IsraelPharm, not substitutes, while continuing under the full care of their own prescribing physician.

What is the standard dosage of Celexa?

It is important to follow the dosage instructions printed on the label of the box. Check with a doctor or pharmacist if there are any doubts regarding the proper dosage and treatment regimen. For depression, the usual dose is 20 mg once daily, which a doctor may increase to a maximum of 40 mg per day. For panic disorder, treatment typically starts at 10 mg per day for the first week before increasing to 20 mg per day, with a doctor able to raise this to a maximum of 40 mg per day if needed. Patients over 65 years of age and those with liver problems generally require a lower dose, with a maximum of 20 mg per day.

How is Celexa administered?

Celexa is taken once a day as a single dose, at any time, with or without food. Tablets should be swallowed with a little water and should not be held in the mouth longer than needed to swallow, as the medicine has a bitter taste. The tablet can be divided if needed.
  • Missed dose: If a dose is missed, take it as soon as it is remembered. Never take a double dose to make up for one that was missed.
  • Alcohol: It is sensible to avoid alcohol during treatment, although Celexa has not been shown to increase the effects of alcohol on its own.
  • Stopping treatment: Treatment should not be stopped suddenly without consulting a doctor, even if symptoms improve. Stopping abruptly can cause withdrawal symptoms, and any change in dose should be gradual and doctor-supervised.

How should Celexa be stored?

Store Celexa at room temperature below 86°F (30°C), in a closed place out of the reach and sight of children. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the packaging – expiry dates refer to the last day of the printed month.

This text is for informational purposes only. Please consult a doctor or pharmacist before using this medication.

The patient information leaflet that is included with Celexa includes full information about the correct usage, storage and possible side effects. Be sure to read and understand these, and if there are any questions, discuss these with a healthcare provider or pharmacist before starting treatment.

Caution: Celexa is not recommended during pregnancy unless this has been discussed with a healthcare provider. Taking Celexa near the end of pregnancy may increase the risk of heavy vaginal bleeding shortly after birth, and may affect the newborn baby. A doctor or midwife should always be informed if Celexa is being taken during pregnancy.

Caution: Celexa should not be used while breastfeeding, as small amounts of the medication may pass into breast milk.

Most people who use Celexa do not experience any adverse side effects. Doctors prescribe this medication because they assess the benefits of such treatment outweigh any likely unwanted effects.

Common side effects:

  • Sleepiness or difficulty sleeping
  • Headache
  • Changes in sleeping pattern
  • Loss of body strength or general weakness
  • Increased sweating
  • Dry mouth
  • Nausea, or feeling sick
  • Decreased appetite
  • Decreased sexual drive, or problems with sexual performance

Serious side effects that require immediate medical attention:

  • Increased risk of suicidal thoughts and actions: Celexa and other antidepressants may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or actions in people up to 25 years of age, particularly within the first few months of treatment or when the dose is changed. Any new or worsening changes in mood, behavior, thoughts, or feelings must be reported to a healthcare provider immediately.
  • Severe allergic reaction: Symptoms such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or severe itching with raised skin lumps require immediate medical attention.
  • Abnormal heart rhythm: A fast or irregular heartbeat, or fainting, can be a sign of a serious and potentially life-threatening heart rhythm problem. This requires emergency medical attention.
  • Seizures: Sudden, uncontrolled electrical disturbances in the brain that cause convulsions. A first-time seizure, or a worsening of existing seizures, should be reported to a doctor immediately.
  • Manic episodes: A state of extreme mental overactivity that may occur in people with bipolar-type conditions. Symptoms include feeling elated, overexcited, or unusually energetic, and should be reported to a doctor.
  • Serotonin syndrome: A potentially life-threatening reaction that can occur when Celexa is combined with certain other medications. Symptoms requiring immediate medical attention include high fever, agitation, confusion, trembling, and sudden muscle contractions.
  • Low sodium levels in the blood: The body needs salt to function properly, and Celexa can cause sodium levels to drop too low. Warning signs include tiredness, confusion, and muscle twitching, and should be reported to a doctor right away.

Not all the known side effects of Celexa are listed here. If these or other unlisted symptoms persist or worsen, consult a healthcare provider or pharmacist.

Celexa (citalopram) is primarily used to treat:

  • Depression is a medical condition involving a persistent low mood or loss of interest in activities that were previously enjoyed, lasting most of the day, nearly every day, for an extended period, and disrupting daily life, work, and personal relationships. Other common features can include fatigue, trouble concentrating, and changes in sleep or appetite. It is one of the most common mental health conditions worldwide and is associated with a wide range of emotional and physical symptoms.
  • Panic disorder is a condition characterized by recurring, unexpected episodes of intense fear, often called panic attacks. These episodes typically come on suddenly and can include physical symptoms such as a pounding or racing heartbeat, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, and a feeling of losing control, even though there is no actual danger present. Panic disorder can lead to ongoing worry about when the next attack might occur, which can itself become disruptive to daily life.

It can also be prescribed off-label by a doctor for other conditions, including:

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Social Phobia (Social Anxiety Disorder)
  • Bulimia Nervosa
  • Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)
  • Postmenopausal flushing
  • Alcohol use disorder
