If a sudden allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) occurs after taking Savella, with symptoms like swelling of the face, tongue, or throat making it difficult to breathe or swallow, or there is wheezing, hives, rash, blistering, or peeling of the skin, call a doctor or 911 right away, or go to an emergency room immediately.
Symptoms suggestive of severe cardiovascular events, such as chest pain or significant changes in heart rhythm, require urgent attention.
Most people who use Savella do not experience any adverse side effects. Doctors prescribe this medication because they assess the benefits of such treatment outweigh any likely unwanted effects.
Some of the side effects that have been reported include nausea, constipation, headache, dizziness, and increased sweating. Other frequently reported effects may involve insomnia or disturbances in sleep patterns. In some cases, patients might experience elevated blood pressure or heart rate. Although these side effects are generally mild to moderate, monitoring by a healthcare provider is advisable to ensure that they do not progress.
Not all side effects are listed here. If these or other unlisted symptoms persist or worsen, consult a healthcare provider or pharmacist.
Savella is primarily approved for the management of fibromyalgia in adults.
Fibromyalgia is characterized by chronic widespread pain, tenderness in localized areas, and a host of other symptoms such as fatigue, sleep disturbances, and cognitive difficulties often referred to as “fibro fog.” Patients with fibromyalgia may also experience headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, and mood disorders. The condition is believed to involve abnormal pain processing in the central nervous system, where heightened sensitivity to pain signals is common.
Savella can be prescribed off-label for chronic depression and social anxiety; however, it is only approved for treatment of fibromyalgia in the US.
