Provigil / Nuvigil (modafinil) promotes wakefulness by altering the levels of some neurotransmitters in the brain. Provigil is used to treat excessive sleepiness caused by obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), narcolepsy, or shift work sleep disorder. Modafinil belongs to a class of drugs known as eugeroic medication, which are Class IV controlled substances. Schedule IV substances are defined as drugs with a low potential for abuse and low risk of dependence that stimulate activity of the central nervous system.
Dosage

Most people who use Provigil do not experience any negative side effects. Doctors prescribe Provigil because they assess that the benefits that such treatment yields outweigh any likely unwanted effects.
Some of the side effects that have been reported include headaches, nausea, nervousness, anxiety, dizziness, and difficulty sleeping.
Not all side effects are listed here. If these or other unlisted symptoms persist or worsen, consult a healthcare provider or pharmacist.
Excessive sleepiness can be due to narcolepsy and other sleep disorders such as difficulty in breathing during sleep, usually due to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) or hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS). People who have to work with irregular schedules or schedules that interfere with a normal sleep routine may present with Shift Work Sleep Disorder (SWSD) in which case they could be sleepy during their work hours.
Provigil / Nuvigil does not make up for lost sleep and should not be used to treat tiredness or hold off sleep in people who do not have a sleep disorder. It is not recommended for treatment of children or teenagers who are having difficulty sleeping.
