Jardiance (generic name: empagliflozin) is a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor.

Empagliflozin acts as a blocker for the SGLT2 protein in the kidney tubules, whose primary function is to reduce the amount of reabsorbed glucose and sodium in the blood. This ensures that glucose and salt are expelled through urine and not returned to the bloodstream.

As well as the effect on glucose, Jardiance reduces the heart’s workload and decreases the internal pressure inside the kidney’s filtering units.

The benefits include:

  • An improvement in glycemic control for adults with type 2 diabetes
  • A reduction in the risk of sustained kidney damage from high salt excretion
  • A reduction in the risks of heart failure with reduced ejection fraction.

Dosage

The prescribing doctor sets the dosage based on each patient’s underlying condition. It is essential to follow the prescribing doctor’s instructions. Before use, read the manufacturer’s Product Insert that comes with the medication.

Some side effects have been reported, such as:

  • Vaginal yeast infections. Women can develop a vaginal odor, white or yellowish vaginal discharge, or vaginal itching.
  • Yeast infection of the skin around the penis (balanitis)
  • Nasopharyngitis
  • Urinary tract infections

If these do not clear up after a few days or worsen, consult with a physician or pharmacist. Please note that not all possible side effects can be listed. If you experience any of these or any other unexpected side effects, seek medical attention promptly.

Jardiance can be prescribed for:

  • Glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus, as an adjunct to diet and exercise
  • Reducing the risk of kidney function decline and end-stage kidney disease
  • Reducing the risk of heart failure in adults with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF).
  • What to avoid when taking Jardiance?

Jardiance can interact with several medications, so it’s essential to have a complete medical history available when prescribed. Amongst others, diuretics and Jardine both cause a boost in urine production and, together, can cause dehydration. Lithium, prescribed to treat bipolar disorder, can be partially deactivated by Jardiance. Insulin itself, together with Jardiance, can induce hypoglycemia. In all instances, the prescribing doctor should have been made aware of all current medications.
  • Will Jardiance damage the kidneys?

There have been some reports of people on Jardiance suffering sudden kidney injury. Symptoms such as a sharp reduction in appetite for food or drink, vomiting or diarrhea should be reported to the doctor immediately.
  • Can you stop taking Jardiance abruptly?

Treatment with Jardiance should not be suspended unless a doctor recommends it. Call a doctor immediately during treatment if a Urinary Tract Infection or yeast infection appears and if any of the original symptoms persist or if any of the side effects suddenly worsen.
  • Can Jardiance be used to treat heart failure (HF)?

Jardiance (empagliflozin) is now approved in the US for adults with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). Empagliflozin reduces oxidative stress and can also delay atherosclerosis.
  • Is SGLT2 approved for heart failure without diabetes?

Empagliflozin was initially studied and approved for treating diabetes, but is now also recognized as a treatment for heart failure (HF) and chronic kidney disease (CKD), even in patients who do not have diabetes.
  • What class of drug is empagliflozin?

Jardiance is a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor that lowers blood sugar and salt levels by causing the kidneys to excrete more glucose and sodium into the urine. Together with diet and exercise, SGLT2i drugs are prescribed to lower blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes and to prevent heart failure in patients as soon as heart failure symptoms have developed, even if patients are in a stable state.
  • How does empagliflozin work in heart failure?

Jardiance reduces sodium and volume load through its diuretic and natriuretic properties, causing intravascular contraction. Empagliflozin is associated with weight loss, as well as reductions in blood pressure without increasing the heart rate.
  • Why is SGLT2 contraindicated in patients with renal failure?

Because empagliflozin can cause blood volume contraction, inhibitors such as Jardiance can cause acute kidney injury (AKI). Physicians consider factors that might increase the risk of acute kidney injury before prescribing Jardiance.
  • Can you drink alcohol while taking empagliflozin?

Patients with type 2 diabetes taking Jardiance are generally advised to limit alcohol intake because they can suffer hypoglycemia (low sugar) if the consumption of alcohol coincides with taking the medication.
