Denavir/Fenlips (generic name: penciclovir) is a topical antiviral for treating the Herpes Simplex virus, commonly known as cold sores. It helps heal sores faster and reduces symptoms like tingling, pain, burning, and itching. Penciclovir is an antiviral that works by stopping the virus’s growth. It doesn’t cure herpes but helps reduce the likelihood of it spreading. Denavir is for topical use only.
If unsure about the dosage and how to use the medicine, it’s best to check with a doctor or pharmacist. It’s essential to start treating a cold sore as soon as it shows signs like tingling, redness, and itching near the lips.Â
The usual suggestion for adults and children over 12 years old is to apply Denavir to the affected areas roughly every two hours during the day (around eight times a day) using a clean finger. Even if treatment begins after the sore appears, it can speed up healing, ease pain, and limit the virus’s spread.Â
The treatment should usually last at least four days. If the cold sore worsens or doesn’t improve after four days, consult a doctor. Follow the treatment for the full four days, even if there’s improvement earlier, as stopping early may cause the sore to return.Â
Remember to wash hands before and after each cream application. In case of a missed application, apply the next dose without using more cream to compensate.

It is generally recommended that cold sores are not licked, if possible, during a cold sore outbreak.
If the sores don’t get better on their own within two weeks, the individual should visit a doctor for an assessment.
