Coreg / Carvadexon (carvedilol) is in a group of drugs called alpha 1 and dual-action beta receptor blockers. Alpha and beta dual receptor blockers such as Coreg are approved by the FDA to treat hypertension (high blood pressure), left ventricular dysfunction following myocardial infarction and heart failure. High blood pressure is a prevalent condition that carries an increased risk of adverse cardiovascular events such as stroke, myocardial infarction (heart attack), congestive heart failure and kidney failure.
Dosage
Take the dose as specified by the prescribing doctor. The usual dose for high blood pressure in adults starts at 3.125 mg (half of the 6.25 mg tablet) twice a day. The doctor may increase the dose to 25 mg twice daily if needed. If for some reason the doses of Coreg have been missed for two or more weeks, consult with a doctor about restarting since it may be necessary to restart on the lower start-up dose.
Coreg should not be taken by a woman who is already pregnant or breastfeeding, or who could fall pregnant while taking it, unless this has been discussed with the prescribing doctor.
If a higher dosage has been taken accidentally, or if a child has accidentally swallowed the medicine, go immediately to a doctor or a hospital emergency room along with the drug package. If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as possible. However, if it cannot be made up for on the same day, skip the missed dose and return to the regular dosing schedule. Do not make up for a missed dose by double dosing.
Caution:
If a sudden allergic reaction such as swelling of the face, tongue or throat makes it difficult to breathe, it must be reported to a doctor immediately, or call 911 and go to an emergency room.

The most common side effects of dual alpha-1 beta-blockers are:
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Irregular (fast) heartbeat
- Disturbed sleep
- Chest pains
- Shortness of breath
- Swelling of the arms and legs (edema).
If these side effects persist or worsen, consult a doctor or pharmacist.
Check with a doctor immediately if there is any pain or discomfort in the chest; dilated veins in the neck; irregular breathing or heartbeat; weight gain; shortness of breath; reduced volume and frequency of urine; swelling of the face, fingers, feet, or lower legs; or wheezing.
Coreg is approved for people with hypertension (high blood pressure). High blood pressure can result in heart attacks, strokes, and kidney failure.
The most common symptoms of high blood pressure are:
- Severe headaches
- Nosebleed (epistaxis)
- Breathlessness
- Ringing in ears (tinnitus)
- Sleepiness or insomnia
- Confusion
- Fatigue
- Excess sweating
- Vomiting
- Blurred vision
Even if none of these symptoms have been experienced, it should not be assumed that blood pressure is normal. The only way to determine blood pressure properly is to have the pressure checked regularly.
