medicinal-mushrooms blogLast week we introduced you to the idea of using mushrooms as a medicinal dietary supplement, just like other vitamin and dietary supplements found in health food stores. At IsraelPharm.com we often get asked about purchasing different dietary supplements alongside the prescription medication being dispensed. While we currently do not advertise the supplements on IsraelPharm.com, however, we do help supply them upon request from loyal customers. It got us thinking, if our customers want supplements and we often supply them alongside the prescription medication purchased then why not make it a bit more official? So, we decided to start with nutraceutical medicinal mushrooms.

What’s so special about mushrooms?

We’re used to hearing about supplements like Omega fish oils but mushrooms? Really? Here’s the thing. Mushrooms have amazing therapeutic benefits, so it’s no wonder that the nutraceutical industry is making a bee-line for mushroom products. We’re hot on the train as well. Even though we deal in prescription medications for diseases and common illnesses like Diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol and depression there’s no denying that medicinal mushrooms can be used therapeutically alongside prescription medications to help prevent and treat these illnesses. So, we found these amazing medicinal mushrooms, proven through clinical studies to have positive effects on health and especially the aging market. They are called nutraceutical mushrooms and are considered a dietary supplement. We don’t have these medicinal mushrooms in house but we can arrange to send them to you via our partners in the US.

All mushrooms are not the same though. Below are the most powerful types of medicinal mushrooms and a bit about their therapeutic effects.

Coriolus versicolor (Turkey Tails)
These are quite colorful and can actually be found quite commonly in woodlands. It has a thin and velvety looking skin and it grows in clusters. Turkey Tail mushrooms are known for their therapeutic property of strengthening the immune system, increasing energy and fighting cancer thanks to their strong anti-viral compounds. They are particularly effective at fighting cervical cancer and liver cancer – cancers that have a strong link to oncoviruses (viruses that are known to induce symptoms of cancer). This medicinal mushroom is a high anti-oxidant can also help to regenerate damaged bone marrow.

Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi)
Reishi mushrooms are shiny with a wood like texture. This type of mushroom is brilliant for boosting the immune system so it’s good for fighting viral infections and flu. It’s also beneficial for the liver, lungs, kidneys and heart so if you have chronic asthma, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or kidney disease then a supplement with this inside would be good for you. It’s nick-named the mushroom of immortality, as well as these general benefits it’s a good mushroom to take for promoting general good health and longevity and is particularly popular in the anti-aging nutraceutical market.

Polyporus umbellatus (Zhu Ling)
Zhu Ling mushrooms grow from a single stem and into rosettes and are light grey-white color. These mushroom are good anti-oxidant and stimulates a healthy and strong immune system. They are particularly good for fighting off aging as they contain DHEA (an adrenal gland hormone that is important for good hormonal balance, something that decreases and becomes imbalanced as we grow older). Zhu King is also known for its help in fighting liver disease and cancer of the bladder.

Hericium erinaceus (Lion’s Mane)
Lion’s Mane mushrooms are snow white in color and cascade downwards in long thin icicles, a bit like stalactites do in a cave. If you want to improve your memory and mood then the Lion’s Mane mushroom has the best therapeutic properties for you. It nourishes the brain so it great for focus and memory. This means it’s beneficial in treating neurological diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. These mushrooms are also good for protecting the gastrointestinal tract from inflammation, aiding digestion and controlling cholesterol and reducing blood sugar levels. It’s also been researched for its anti-cancer benefits, in particular esophageal and gastric cancers.

Lentinula Edodes (Shiitake)

Shiitake mushrooms are one of the more commonly known mushrooms and have been used in Asia for their therapeutic benefits for 6,000 years. They are also commonly found in the supermarket and are used widely in cooking thanks to their rich, smoky flavor. They are anti-oxidant, anti-viral, anri-tumor and high immune stimulating mushrooms. They are also high in vitamins B2, C and calcium. Shiitake mushrooms are good for lowering cholesterol, lowering high blood pressure and maintaining a good cardiovascular system.

Like many other mushrooms, Maitake mushrooms are also strong anti-oxidants and have strong anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties. They can be used to fight AIDS, cholesterol, Diabetes, blood pressure and liver disease.

The Chaga mushroom grows on birch trees and looks more like bark than it does a typical mushroom. It is considered to be one of the highest anti-oxidant foods in the world! It purifies, detoxes, boosts immunity and fights tumors! Chaga is good for treating ulcers and promoting gastrointestinal health as well as normalizing blood pressure and cholesterol levels. And sustaining cardiovascular health. It’s soothing properties even help reduce stress.
