Most people who use Zemplar do not experience any negative side effects. Doctors prescribe Zemplar because they assess that the benefits that such treatment yields outweigh any likely unwanted effects.
If after taking Zemplar a person experiences a sudden allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), with symptoms like swelling of the face, tongue or throat making it difficult to breathe or swallow, or there is wheezing, hives, rash, blistering or peeling of the skin, call a doctor or 911 right away, or go to an emergency room immediately.
Some of the side effects that have been reported include:
- Gastrointestinal bleeding
- Chills
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Fever
- Influenza
- Pneumonia
- Sepsis
- Dry mouth
- Edema
Serious side effects are:
- Confusion
- Slurred speech
- Arm or leg weakness
- Loss of coordination
- Tremors.
- Sudden loss of vision
- Eye pain or swelling
- Fast, irregular, or hammering heartbeats
- Fluttering in the chest
- Shortness of breath
Zemplar is indicated in the treatment and prevention of high levels of parathyroid hormone, a natural substance produced by the body in patients with long-term renal impairment.Â
A lack of calcium and a specific type of vitamin D can cause an excess of parathyroid hormone. If not treated properly, it can lead to high blood calcium levels (hypercalcaemia), which may cause symptoms like:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Drowsiness and confusion
- Dehydration
- Muscle spasms.
- Bone pain
- Joint tenderness or pain
- Irregular heartbeats.
It might also lead to significant bone abnormalities and osteoporosis.
