Verquvo (generic name: vericiguat) is an oral medication prescribed for adults diagnosed as having chronic heart failure symptoms classified as HFrEF (indication of an ejection fraction less than 45%) who have had a recent hospitalization or the need to receive intravenous medication. Vericiguat is a novel drug that increases cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) levels, leading to improved cardiac function. It is used primarily to reduce the risk of severe cardiovascular events leading to hospitalization for heart failure. Heart failure is when the heart is weak and cannot pump enough blood to the body. Patients with HFrEF can exhibit symptoms like shortness of breath, fatigue, reduced capacity to exercise, fluid retention (edema), and accelerated heartbeat.

Verquvo comes in three strengths. The prescribing doctor will determine the dose and how it should be taken. The recommended starting dose is one tablet of 2.5 mg daily. The doctor will adjust the dose depending on how well it is tolerated during treatment. The dose will usually be increased after two weeks to one tablet of 5 mg daily and after two weeks up to the maximum of one tablet of 10 mg daily. If symptoms of low blood pressure are felt while taking Verquvo, this can cause dizziness and light-headedness, in which case the doctor may reduce the dose or halt treatment with Verquvo temporarily. Take one tablet at the same time each day with food. If you cannot swallow the tablet, you may crush it and mix it with water. Take this mixture immediately after preparing it. Do not exceed the recommended dose.

This is for informational purposes only. Please consult your doctor or pharmacist before using any medication.

Patients taking Verquvo have experienced symptoms coming from low blood pressure (hypotension), such as blurry vision, confusion, dizziness, syncope (fainting), lightheadedness, nausea or vomiting, or sleepiness.

Some other less common side effects include anemia (reduced number of red blood cells), indigestion (dyspepsia), or heartburn (gastro-oesophageal reflux).

If these persist or worsen, consult with a doctor or pharmacist.

Heart failure develops because the muscles in the heart become weak or stiff, reducing the ability to pump blood through the blood vessels normally. Congestive heart failure develops from the accumulation of blood and fluid in the lungs, and the body doesn’t get enough oxygen-rich blood to work properly.

Heart failure is most often caused by other heart conditions, including

  • Atherosclerosis (coronary artery disease or CAD)
  • Heart attack
  • High blood pressure
  • Arrhythmia (where the heart rhythm is irregular)
  • Heart valve problems

Doctors diagnose heart failure by measuring the percentage of blood the heart can pump with each beat, measured by a unit called ejection fraction, or EF. This measures how strongly the left ventricle squeezes blood out of the heart. For a healthy heart, the EF reading is between 55% and 75%. If the EF measure is below 40%, it indicates that the ventricle isn’t ejecting enough blood to the body, and this is heart failure with a reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF).

Patients with HFrEF typically exhibit symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, reduced exercise tolerance, edema (fluid retention), and rapid heartbeat.

Medications and lifestyle modifications such as dietary changes, exercise, and fluid management may be crucial in managing HFpEF.

  • When should I take Verquvo 2.5 mg?
One Verquvo 2.5mg tablet each day is the dose that most doctors start with. Following that, doctors usually double the dose approximately every fortnight weeks until the target maintenance dose of 10 mg is reached.
  • What is the most important information I should know about Verquvo?
A woman must not be pregnant when starting treatment with Verquovo and should not fall pregnant as long as the treatment continues. Doctors usually do a pregnancy test to make sure that the patient is not pregnant and require use of effective forms of birth control all through the treatment and for one month after the last dose.
  • What is heart failure with HFrEF?
HFrEF is the term used when the left ventricle of the heart is pumping less than or equal to 40% of the volume of the chamber. The ratio is called the ejection fraction, or EF. It means that the heart can't pump with sufficient force to push enough blood into the body.
  • What type of drug is vericiguat?
Verquvo is a soluble guanylate cyclase stimulator (sGC). sGC is an enzyme that controls heart muscle functions. It produces relaxation of smooth muscle as well as widening of blood vessels in the lungs to allow blood to flow easily.
