Symbicort is a medicine used to treat asthma in adults over the age of 12. It may also be prescribed to patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who are older than 18.Â

Symbicort contains two medications - budesonide and formoterol. Budesonide is a steroid and formoterol is a long-acting bronchodilator. These medications work together in the lungs to help prevent and lessen symptoms associated with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Ventolin is a rescue inhaler to relieve sudden asthma attacks. Ventolin is safe to use even while on Symbicort. All asthmatics should carry a rescue inhaler, regardless of other treatments.
One of the active ingredients of Symbicort is formoterol, which is a long-acting beta-2 agonist (LABA). LABAs help to relax the muscles around the airways to improve wheezing, cough, chest tightness and shortness of breath.
There is no cure for COPD, so Symbicort should be taken for as long as and exactly as prescribed.
Users of Symbicort for asthma should feel their symptoms starting to improve within 15 minutes of inhalation. Full improvement of all symptoms may not occur for two weeks or even longer after you have started treatment, and the results can vary between patients.
Some conditions, such as asthma, may become worse if the drug is suddenly stopped. There can also be other withdrawal symptoms like weakness, weight loss, nausea, muscle pain, headache, tiredness, and dizziness.
