Pred Forte (prednisolone) is a synthetic corticosteroid ophthalmic solution that is prescribed to decrease inflammation in the front of the eyes (conjunctiva, cornea and anterior segment). It is sometimes used after eye surgery to reduce swelling.
Dosage
Follow the prescribing doctor’s recommendations. The usual course of treatment is to instill one or two drops into the corner of each eye two to four times each day. In the earlier period of treatment (typically for up to two days post-surgery), this could be increased to one or two drops every hour.
Carefully follow the instruction on how to administer the drops. Shake the bottle of Pred Forte gently before instillation of the drops, and tilt the head backwards so that the drops don’t run out too soon. The recommendation is to close the eyes and press gently on the inner corner (lacrimal sac) for a minute after instillation of the drop(s).

Most people who need to use Pred Forte do not experience any negative side effects. Doctors prescribe Pred Forte because they assess that the benefits of such treatment outweigh any likely unwanted effects.
Some of the side effects that have been reported include:
- Stinging, burning, itching, or irritation of the eyes for 1 to 2 minutes shortly after the drops are applied
- Temporary blurred or cloudy vision
- Increased sensitivity to light
- A feeling of grittiness like sand in the eye
- Allergic reactions.
Not all side effects are listed here. If these or other unlisted symptoms persist or worsen, consult a healthcare provider or pharmacist.
Pred Forte can reduce inflammation and swelling of the eyes that may have been caused by exposure to chemicals, heat, radiation, or foreign objects. It can also be the result of allergies and often is experienced following surgery, such as cataract extraction and corneal grafts.
