Nexplanon (generic name: etonogestrel) is a contraceptive implant that prevents ovulation and pregnancy. The contraceptive is implanted by a healthcare provider under the skin on the upper arm. Nexplanon is only a contraceptive preventing pregnancy. It does not provide any protection against sexually transmitted diseases or AIDS.

Dosage

Each implant acts to prevent pregnancy for up to 3 years. A doctor must remove it and replace it if continued contraceptive protection is desired.

Mild side effects may occur soon after Nexplanon is implanted. These should clear up within a few days but consult with the prescribing healthcare provider if they persist or worsen. The main side effects that have been reported are:

  • Breast pain or tenderness
  • Dark patches of skin on areas exposed to the sun
  • Irregular menstrual cycles or spotting
  • Nausea
  • Weight gain
  • Pain, redness, or irritation at the injection site

There have been some rare occurrences of reactions to the implant. Report immediately to a clinic or ER if any of the following symptoms are felt:

  • Skin rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
  • Pain, swelling, or warmth in the leg or shortness of breath and chest pain (may indicate a blood clot)
  • Severe stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, and fever (may indicate gallbladder problems)
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg, trouble speaking, confusion, trouble walking, loss of balance or coordination, dizziness, severe headache, change in vision (may indicate a stroke)
  • Pain in the right upper abdomen, loss of appetite, nausea, light-colored stool, dark yellow or brown urine, yellowing skin or eyes, unusual weakness or fatigue (may indicate liver injury)
  • New or worsening migraines or headaches
  • Unusual vaginal discharge, itching, or odor
  • Worsening mood, feelings of depression.

Please bear in mind that not all possible side effects can be listed. If you experience any of these or any other unexpected side effects, seek medical attention from your prescribing physician.

Instead of oral contraceptives, Nexplanon can be prescribed for women who wish to avoid pregnancy.

  • What kind of hormone is Nexplanon?
Nexplanon (etonogestrel) is a synthetic progestogen. It is an agonist of the biological target of progestogens like progesterone. It works by stopping ovulation, thickening the mucus around the opening of the cervix, and altering the lining of the uterus. It blocks the fertilization of eggs and acts as a contraception.
  • What does etonogestrel do to your body?
Primarily, etonogestrel inhibits fertility by inhibiting the release of luteinizing hormone, a reproductive hormone necessary for ovulation.
  • Can etonogestrel cause hair loss?
Progestins with a high androgen index, like Nexplanon, can cause hair loss by miniaturizing hair follicles. This is a slow process; hair loss may only occur after many years of continuous treatment with Nexplanon.
  • Can you drink with the contraceptive implant?
Alcohol use typically does not reduce the effectiveness of contraceptive implants that work for up to 3 years. But drinking alcohol during the implant period could worsen known side effects, such as headaches and nausea.
