Kevzara (
generic name: sarilumab) is an injectable prescription medication used to manage
moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis in adult patients who have not responded adequately to one or more disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (
DMARDs). It belongs to a class of drugs called interleukin-6 (IL-6) inhibitors.
Sarilumab is a protein called a
monoclonal antibody that works by blocking the action of the IL-6 protein, which has a major role in the inflammatory process associated with rheumatoid arthritis. By inhibiting IL-6, Kevzara reduces inflammation, which can relieve joint pain and prevent further joint damage.
Kevzara is commonly administered in combination with methotrexate (such as
Humira, which is also a DMARD) for enhanced benefit. In some instances, Kevzara may be administered as a monotherapy if methotrexates are not well tolerated. Studies show that Kevzara can reduce pain and improve physical function in those with rheumatoid arthritis, thereby enhancing quality of life. This medication is administered via a
subcutaneous injection and is typically prescribed by a specialist, such as a rheumatologist, who monitors the patient’s response and adjusts treatment as necessary to manage side effects and maximize benefit.
While Kevzara’s inhibition of IL-6 is beneficial for rheumatoid arthritis, it may also impact the immune system, increasing susceptibility to infections. Patients must be closely monitored for signs of infection, and regular blood tests are often required to ensure Kevzara’s safe use over time.
Dosage
The prescribing healthcare provider sets the dose and regimen, and instructions must be followed closely. Kevzara is typically injected subcutaneously every two weeks, depending on the patient’s medical history and can be adjusted based on the response to the treatment. The injection should be administered in the thigh, abdomen, or upper arm, avoiding areas with bruises, scars, or stretch marks.
Storage
Kevzara should be stored in a refrigerator at 2°-8°C (36°-46°F) but should not be frozen. Before use, the injection can be left at room temperature for 30 minutes to reduce discomfort upon administration. Use the pen/syringe within 14 days of taking it out of the refrigerator, and do not put it back into refrigeration.
If in any doubt, consult our blog on safe medicine management. Kevzara is shipped to you in pre-filled syringe pens via cold-chain storage, for which an extra charge is levied.
Questions About Kevzara
Can Kevzara be combined with other DMARDs besides methotrexate?
Yes, Kevzara can be used with other DMARDs if methotrexate alone is insufficient or poorly tolerated. However, only specific DMARDs are generally considered for combination use, and the prescribing healthcare provider will decide based on the patient’s overall treatment plan.
Is Kevzara used for conditions other than rheumatoid arthritis?
Currently,
Kevzara is FDA-approved only for moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis and has not been approved for other conditions. Other DMARDs can be prescribed for conditions such as ankylosing spondylitis, connective tissue diseases, psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, vasculitis, and inflammatory bowel disease.
Are there any dietary restrictions while taking sarilumab?
There are no specific dietary restrictions while using
sarilumab. However, due to the potential for increased cholesterol levels with this treatment, a balanced diet and regular monitoring of cholesterol may be ordered by the doctor.

Kevzara is approved for the treatment of moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis in adults. The main symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis include joint pain, swelling, stiffness, and potential deformities if left untreated. Kevzara is particularly beneficial for patients who have not responded to DMARDs like methotrexate and other TNF inhibitors.
