Inspra (generic name: eplerenone) can be prescribed for patients with symptoms of heart failure who have measured a reduced ejection fraction, especially after suffering a heart attack (acute myocardial infarction). A diagnosis of heart failure with a reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) is given when the left upper chamber of the heart is pumping out (ejecting) less than 40%. This indicates that insufficient oxygenated blood is being pumped into the body. Inspra belongs to a group of drugs known as aldosterone antagonists. It works by blocking the action of aldosterone, a hormone that can cause sodium and fluid retention in the body.  Excessive fluid accumulation can exacerbate the conditions leading to heart failure. Inspra reduces fluid buildup in the body and can lower blood pressure. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of cardiovascular (CV) events, strokes and heart attacks. Inspira also reduces the risk of severe outcomes for patients with heart failure, especially in patients who have recently suffered a myocardial infarction (heart attack). Dosage and administration Take the medicine as indicated on the printed label on the box. The doctor prescribes the dosage specific to your symptoms and other medications you may be taking. The tablets can be taken with or without food and should be taken at roughly the same time each day. If a scheduled dose is missed, take it as soon as possible, but if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double-dose.
