Finacea/Axelex/Skinroen/Azelderm (generic name: azelaic acid) is a prescription drug used to treat the inflammatory papules (raised bumps) and pustules (pimples) caused by mild to moderate rosacea. Rosacea can cause papules and pustules on the forehead, nose, and cheeks.
The active ingredient in Finacea/Axelex is azelaic acid. It belongs to a class of drugs known as topical anti-acne agents. Azelaic acid is an antibacterial agent that prevents the growth of susceptible organisms that cause inflammation, redness, and pimples on the skin’s surface, primarily Propionibacterium acnes. The medication is intended for acne treatment in adults alone and not for children.
