Diovan®/Vector® (valsartan) keeps blood vessels from narrowing, which lowers blood pressure and improves blood flow. It also aids in reducing the risk of death after a heart attack.

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives : Difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. In rare cases, valsartan can cause a condition that results in the breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue, leading to kidney failure. Call your doctor right away if you have muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness especially if you also have fever, nausea or vomiting, and dark colored urine. Stop using valsartan and call your doctor at once if you have a serious side effect such as: Eye pain, vision problems, feeling like you might pass out, chest pain, fast or pounding heartbeats, numbness or tingling, or swelling, weight gain. Less serious side effects may include: runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, cough, back pain, diarrhea, constipation, dry mouth, stomach pain, loss of appetite, mild itching, skin rash, sleep problems (insomnia), headache, dizziness, anxiety, tired feeling weakness or impotence, loss of interest in sex, or trouble having an orgasm.

Diovan® (valsartan) is indicated for the treatment of hypertension, to lower blood pressure. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular events, primarily strokes and myocardial infarctions.

  • Is Valsartan an ACE inhibitor or an ARB?

Diovan (valsartan) and other “-sartan” drugs are a class of medicines known as angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure. Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors also work to lower blood pressure by affecting the production of angiotensin II.
  • Why is ARB preferred over ACE?

Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) like Diovan are better for patients with high blood pressure who have had adverse reactions to angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. ARBs are less likely to cause coughs than ACE inhibitors, and patients are more likely to stay on them because of fewer adverse effects.
  • Can you take ARBs and calcium channel blockers together?

Combining calcium channel blockers (CCB) with angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB) like Diovan is a possible antihypertensive strategy. The benefits of CCB/ARB combined therapy include improved blood pressure reduction and lower incidences of adverse events.
  • What should you avoid with ARBs?

Discuss with your doctor or pharmacist whether you are taking prescription or non-prescription drugs that may interact with Diovan. For people taking ARBs for blood pressure, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen, naproxen and indomethacin may have an adverse effect.
  • Can you eat bananas with ARBs?

People taking Diovan should limit their intake of high-potassium foods like bananas, oranges, avocados, tomatoes, white and sweet potatoes and dried fruits, especially apricots.
