Caverject / Viridal (alprostadil) is a self-administered injectable medication that can be used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). Insufficient blood flow into the chambers of the penis is the most common cause of erectile dysfunction, creating the
inability of a man to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse through to orgasm. Alprostadil is a synthetic form of prostaglandin PGE1 that normally relaxes the muscles and blood vessels in the penis, which increases blood flow and facilitates an erection.
Dosage
Caverject and Viridal are supplied as individual vials containing the alprostadil powder, together with separate syringes, containers of the diluent, and needles. Caverject Dual Chamber and Viridal Duo come as a pre-loaded disposable combination designed to deliver a single dose without any need for pre-mixing.
Instructions for how to properly inject with Caverject / Viridal should be given by trained healthcare personnel. Carefully follow the guidelines printed on the
Product Leaflet that comes with the product. Doctors generally advise not to use alprostadil more than once each day, nor two days in a row, and not more than three times per week.

Important: If an erection persists for longer than 4 hours, contact a doctor or call 911 at once. Otherwise, go to a hospital emergency room immediately. Treatment for this condition, known as priapism, should be given within six hours, otherwise it can result in irreversible damage to the penis.
Some of the common side effects of alprostadil are:
- The penis can become bruised, scarred, or bent, especially after long-term use of alprostadil
- The skin on the penis may swell, discolor or bruise, become irritated, inflamed, or swollen, itch, bleed, or feel numb, warm, tender, or painful at the site of injection.
- Muscle spasms
- The testes or scrotum can become red, swollen, or painful or develop lumps called spermatoceles.

- The foreskin and head of the penis can feel tight or swollen
- Urination can change, either passing more urgently and frequently than normal or with pain or difficulty
- Blood can be seen in the urine or at the end of the penis, which could be because the medicine was accidentally injected directly into the urethra

Not all side effects are listed here. If these or other unlisted symptoms persist or worsen, consult with a healthcare provider or pharmacist.
