Cataflam (generic name: diclofenac potassium) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used for the management of acute pain and inflammation. It is particularly effective when rapid pain relief is desired, such as in cases of premenstrual pain. Cataflam works by inhibiting the enzymes that produce prostaglandins, chemicals that cause inflammation and pain in the body. For more information, refer to the Mayo Clinic page dedicated to Cataflam here.

Dosage

It is important to follow the prescribing physician’s instructions and not to exceed the recommended dose.  The typical adult dosage for Cataflam is 50 mg taken two to three times daily, depending on the severity of the condition and the patient’s response to treatment. If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as remembered, unless it is almost time for the next dose. In such cases, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dosing schedule. Do not double -dose to make up for a missed one.

Storage

Store Cataflam tablets at room temperature, away from moisture and direct light. Keep the medication out of reach of children. Do not store in the bathroom or near sinks. Ensure the bottle is tightly closed when not in use. Get more advice about safe drug storage here.

Read the information leaflet that comes with the medication.

If a sudden allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) occurs after taking Cataflam, with symptoms like swelling of the face, tongue, or throat making it difficult to breathe or swallow, or there is wheezing, hives, rash, blistering, or peeling of the skin, call a doctor or 911 right away, or go to an emergency room immediately.

Most people who use Cataflam do not experience any adverse side effects. Doctors prescribe this medication because they assess the benefits of such treatment outweigh any likely unwanted effects.

Some of the side effects that have been reported include gastrointestinal discomfort, such as nausea, indigestion, or abdominal pain. Other possible side effects are dizziness, headache, or skin rash.

Serious side effects can include gastrointestinal bleeding, liver or kidney dysfunction, and severe allergic reactions. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness, or slurred speech. Cataflam is contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to diclofenac, those with active gastrointestinal ulcers or bleeding, severe liver or kidney impairment, and during the third trimester of pregnancy.

Not all side effects are listed here. If these or other unlisted symptoms persist or worsen, consult a healthcare provider or pharmacist.

Cataflam is indicated for the relief of acute pain and inflammation in conditions such as:

  • Premenstrual Pain: Alleviates menstrual cramps and discomfort associated with menstruation.
  • Musculoskeletal Injuries: Reduces pain and swelling from sprains, strains, and other injuries.
  • Dental Pain: Manages pain following dental procedures or toothaches.

  • What are NSAIDs, and how do they work?
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are a class of medications that reduce pain, decrease fever, prevent blood clots, and, in higher doses, decrease inflammation by inhibiting enzymes involved in the production of prostaglandins.
  • Can I take NSAIDs if I have a history of stomach ulcers?
Individuals with a history of stomach ulcers should use NSAIDs with caution, as they can increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding. Consult your healthcare provider for alternative pain management options.
  • Is diclofenac safe for long-term use?
Long-term use of diclofenac potassium can increase the risk of cardiovascular events and gastrointestinal bleeding. It should be used at the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration necessary.
