Bystolic (generic name: nebivolol) is an oral tablet prescribed to treat high blood pressure and heart failure. It may be used by itself or with other blood pressure medication. Bystolic is a medication in a group known as beta-blockers.  These drugs block the action of the hormone epinephrine, which causes the heart to beat more slowly and with less force. According to the American College of Cardiology, beta-blockers can produce better outcomes in heart failure patients with a more severe form of heart failure (reduced ejection fraction – HFrEF) but showed no benefit for those with partial ejection fraction (HFpEF).

Dosage and administration

Bystolic brand is available as tablets for oral administration containing 2.5, 5, 10, or 20-mg of nebivolol. Vasoxen is a generic equivalent available in 5 and 10-mg strengths. The prescribing doctor will stipulate the strength of initial dose and a regime for increasing the dosage according to the patient’s specific needs and reactions. The tablet can be taken with or without food. If a dose is missed, it can be taken as soon as remembered; but if it is close to the scheduled time of the next dose, the missed dose should be skipped. Do not double-dose. Don’t skip multiple doses or stop taking Bystolic without first talking to a doctor. Stopping suddenly may make cause the underlying condition to worsen or cause other serious heart problems such as angina (severe chest pain) or a heart attack.

Bystolic can cause some mild side effects, including:

  • headache
  • feeling tired
  • nausea or stomach pain
  • diarrhea
  • insomnia.

If these persist or worsen, consult with a doctor or pharmacist.

Before starting to use, read the manufacturer’s Product Insert that comes with the medication. Please note that not all side effects can be listed here.

Bystolic belongs to the group of drugs called beta-blockers. It is prescribed to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). High blood presure can lead to one of more of the following conditions:

  • heart disease
  • myochardial infarctions (heart attacks)
  • strokes
  • heart failure
  • peripheral arterial disease
  • aortic aneurysms
  • kidney disease.

Bystolic may be prescribed to be used by itself or with other blood pressure medication.

  • What is Bystolic taken for?
Bystolic (nebivolol) belongs to a group of medicines called beta-blockers, most often used with other medicines to treat adults with high blood pressure (hypertension). It is not used for children under 18 years of age.
  • What type of beta blocker is Bystolic?
Bystolic is a third-generation beta blocker that possesses novel vasoactive factors. It provides vasodilation by releasing endothelial nitric oxide, which results in an overall favorable hemodynamic side-effect profile
  • Why take Bystolic at night?
This is not usually recommended. Blood pressure usually is lower during sleep and rises slowly towards morning. However, Bystolic reaches peak plasma levels in around four hours, so it would need to be taken at around midnight to have any beneficial effect on sleep.
  • Does Bystolic affect sleep?
Most beta-blockers can lower the pituitary gland’s melatonin output by up to 80%, making it difficult to fall asleep. However, nebivolol does not have these effects, so Bystolic doesn’t affect sleep
  • Can you drink alcohol on Bystolic?
Alcohol and nebivolol can have additive effects in lowering blood pressure. In combination, they can result in headaches, changes in pulse or heart rate, dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting.
  • Can you take vitamins with Bystolic?
Taking Bystolic along with multivitamins with minerals may decrease the effects of the drug. Patients should have been advised to separate the administration times by at least 2 hours where both are necessary
