  • Is Xarelto a blood thinner or antiplatelet?

Xarelto is a member of the group of blood thinners known as direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs). DOACs differ from older blood-thinner medications because they affect fewer blood clotting factors. Xarelto targets just one - Factor Xa ("10a").
  • Does Xarelto destroy platelets?

Platelets are tiny blood cells that are produced in bone marrow. When there is an injury in the body, platelets stick together to form a plug to seal the wound. When the platelet count in blood is too low, the condition is called thrombocytopenia, increasing the risk of bleeding or bruising more than usual. In clinical studies, Xarelto did not lower platelet counts.
  • What is the most common side effect of Xarelto?

Of those listed here, the most common side effect of Xarelto is bleeding, caused by the blood-thinning action of rivaroxaban. Contact a healthcare provider if there is persistent bleeding while taking Xarelto, such as nose bleeds or easy bruising.
  • How to tell whether Xarelto is working?

Xarelto starts to inhibit blood clotting within one to two hours. Its peak effects should become evident between two to four hours after taking a tablet. The effects start to wear off after 24 hours. For that reason, a regular schedule of dosing, either morning or evening, should be stuck to.
  • What not to do while on blood thinners?

While on doses of Xarelto or any other blood thinner, avoiding any injury that can cause bleeding is essential. Special care is needed with the use of knives, scissors, razors, or any sharp object that can cause bleeding. Be careful in any activities and sports that could cause injury. Activities like swimming and walking are safe and should be preferred.
