Actos (
generic name: pioglitazone) can be prescribed to treat type 2 diabetes in adults when blood sugar is not adequately controlled by diet and exercise alone, or when
Metformin by itself does not provide enough control.
Actos belongs to the
thiazolidinediones group. Medicines in this group help the body’s cells respond better to insulin. Insulin is a natural hormone that helps move sugar from the bloodstream into the cells, where it is used for energy.
In
type 2 diabetes, the body may still make insulin, but the cells do not respond as well as they should. This reduced response is often described as
insulin resistance. By improving insulin sensitivity, Actos helps reduce elevated blood sugar levels and supports steadier day‑to‑day control.
Actos may be used on its own in adults who cannot take metformin. It may also be used with other diabetes medicines when control remains inadequate. This can include metformin, sulphonylureas, or insulin, depending on the treatment plan.
This medicine is intended for ongoing management of
type 2 diabetes. It is not intended for children or adolescents under 18 years of age. It is also not suitable for diabetic ketoacidosis.
By improving the body’s response to insulin, Actos supports better long‑term metabolic balance. Better control of
blood sugar helps reduce the risk of complications that can develop over time, such as problems affecting the heart and blood vessels, kidneys, nerves, and eyes.
Dosage
Always use this medicine exactly as directed by a doctor. If there is any uncertainty about dosage or how to use the medicine, consult a doctor or pharmacist.

- If needed, the doctor may increase the dose.

The doctor may review treatment response after several months and adjust the plan if needed. Do not stop treatment without consulting a doctor.

Actos is approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in adults. Type 2 diabetes affects how the body controls sugar in the blood and may develop gradually.
Many adults notice symptoms linked to higher blood sugar. Symptoms can build slowly and may be mild at first. These symptoms may include:
- Increased thirst
- Frequent urination
- Unusual tiredness
- Blurred vision
- Slow healing of cuts
Some people also notice increased hunger, changes in weight, or reduced energy during normal daily activities. Some people have few symptoms early on and are diagnosed by routine blood tests.
When blood sugar remains high for a long time, complications can develop that affect the heart and blood vessels, kidneys, nerves, and eyes.
Actos is used when lifestyle measures alone are not enough, or when metformin cannot be used or does not provide adequate control by itself. Ongoing monitoring helps guide safe long‑term treatment.
