BRILINTA is used to lower your chance of having another heart attack or dying from a heart attack or stroke, but BRILINTA (and similar drugs) can cause bleeding that can be serious and sometimes lead to death. Instances of serious bleeding, such as internal bleeding, may require blood transfusions or surgery. While you take BRILINTA, you may bruise and bleed more easily and be more likely to have nosebleeds. Bleeding will also take longer than usual to stop.

Other common side effects with BRILINTA include dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, slow heartbeat rate, rash, and allergic reactions including swelling of the face, throat, lips, tongue, hands, or feet.

Brilinta, co-administered with acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), is indicated for the prevention of atherothrombotic events in adult patients with – acute coronary syndromes (ACS) or – a history of myocardial infarction (MI) and a high risk of developing an atherothrombotic event. Limitations of use: 90 mg twice daily during the first year after an ACS event followed by 60 mg twice daily for additional 2 years.

  • What is Brilinta prescribed for?

Brilinta (ticagrelor) is commonly prescribed for people who have had a heart attack or experienced severe chest pain caused by a decrease in the supply of oxygen to the heart muscles, and have been treated by inserting a stent.
  • Is Brilinta an anticoagulant?

Ticagrelor is an antiplatelet drug that acts differently from anticoagulant drugs, such as warfarin. It is classified as a P2Y12 inhibitor that works to make platelets less sticky. This helps prevent blood clots. Brilinta is combined with low levels of aspirin, which is called dual antiplatelet therapy.
  • How long should Brilinta be taken for?

It is common practice for patients who have had a stent placed to be prescribed a dual anti-platelet therapy such as Brilinta plus aspirin for twelve months after the procedure. These two medications taken together reduce the risk of blood clots forming
  • Can Brilinta be stopped abruptly?

Stopping Brilinta should not be done without consulting the doctor who prescribed it. For people who had a stent implanted, stopping taking Brilinta too soon increases the risk of blood clots forming in the stent, leading to a heart attack or even death.
  • Can you drink beer while taking Brilinta?

It is usually recommended not to drink alcohol when treated with Brilinta because it is normally taken with aspirin. Consuming alcohol at the same time as aspirin may lead to stomach bleeding and ulcers.

Are All Pharmacists Created Equally?

In my opinion, Australia has done more for pharmacists that any other country, where certain medications can be dispensed at the pharmacist’s discretion. For example, if a child comes in wheezing and short of breath, an Australian pharmacist can dispense a Ventolin Inhaler for asthma. In Israel, this would be illegal…
