Doctors will determine the type of migraine based on the main symptoms.
The primary types are:
Migraine with aura, where there is a warning sign (an 'aura') that a migraine attack is going to begin.
Migraine without aura is the most common type of migraine, where there is no warning.
Chronic migraine is diagnosed when there are more than 15 migraine attacks in a single month.
Migraine with brainstem aura was previously called basilar-type migraine. It is an uncommon form of migraine with aura along with symptoms such as vertigo or ataxia.
Vestibular migraine, with episodes of dizziness, sensations of spinning, floating, internal motion and lightheadedness.
