Voltaren (generic name: diclofenac) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) medication widely used to reduce pain from inflammation, swelling, and joint stiffness caused by arthritis and other conditions.
What are NSAIDs?
NSAIDs are non-opioid analgesic drugs that produce the following main benefits:
- Reduce high temperature and fever
- Decrease inflammation
- Relieve pain.
Voltaren delivers diclofenac in three forms that are meant to be chosen depending on the type, severity, and cause of the pain, as well as factors such any possible adverse side effects and the duration of the problem.
- Voltarin Emulgel is an over-the-counter ointment (gel) that delivers diclofenac in different strengths when rubbed into the specific area that is the source of pain or inflammation.
- Voltarin/Betarin prescription oral medication is a stronger form of diclofenac that is absorbed from the stomach after swallowing, and travels through the blood to reach the source of the pain.
- Voltaren Eye Drops, for cataract and corneal eye surgery to reduce inflammation, swelling and pain.
Voltaren Emulgel (topical diclofenac)
Voltaren Emulgel is recommended for:
✔ Mild to moderate pain in the joints, especially from conditions like osteoarthritis, tendonitis, or muscle strain.
✔ Soft tissue inflammation such as rheumatism and bursitis also respond well to Voltaren Emulgel.
✔ Localized pain in a specific area, such as a particular joint or fingers or toes.
✔ People who want to avoid the side effects of oral NSAIDs on the stomach or kidneys.
How diclofenac gel works:
- The gel is applied directly to the skin over the painful area.
- It penetrates the skin and reduces inflammation in the underlying tissues.
- It has a lower risk of systemic side effects compared to oral diclofenac.
Things to consider if choosing Voltaren Emulgel:
- It may take time to build up its effect, usually at least a few days.
- It needs to be applied several times a day (usually 2-4 times daily).
- It should not be applied on broken or irritated skin.
Voltaren / Betaren tablets – oral diclofenac
Voltarin/Betarin is recommended for:
✔ Moderate to severe systemic pain, especially when affecting multiple joints or when inflammation is widespread.
✔ Chronic conditions like rheumatoid arthritis; severe osteoarthritis; post-injury inflammation; low back pain; acute musculoskeletal disorders such as periarthritis, tendinitis, tenosynovitis, bursitis, ankylosing spondylitis and acute gout. It is also suitable to treat sport injuries like sprains, strains and dislocation.
✔ When topical treatments are not enough to relieve pain.
How it systemic diclofenac works:
- The tablet is absorbed into the bloodstream and reduces inflammation wherever it occurs in the body.
- It provides stronger and longer-lasting relief compared to the gel.
Things to consider if choosing Betaren:
- There are higher risks of systemic side effects, such as stomach irritation, ulcers, kidney strain, or cardiovascular risks.
- It is not recommended for people with a history of gastric ulcers, kidney disease, or heart problems.
- It should only be taken with food to reduce stomach irritation.
How to choose between Emulgel and Betaren?
- If the pain is mild, localized, or related to osteoarthritis or a minor injury, Voltaren Emulgel is the preferred choice.
- If the pain is severe, widespread, or not relieved by topical treatment, Betaren may be needed, but should be used with caution and preferably under a doctor’s supervision.
For long-term use or chronic pain conditions, consulting a doctor is always recommended to prevent potential side effects.
How does Voltaren work?
Voltaren contains diclofenac, which is a member of the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) that act to block the pain associated with inflammation. Inflammation is an unavoidable consequence of how the body heals, but it also results in pain and fever.Â
The body responds to injury and infection with a process known as the inflammatory response. The body produces more molecules known as prostaglandins when there is injury, damage or stress. Prostaglandins are hormone-like substances that trigger inflammation, and this in turn sets off the pain response. NSAIDs like Voltaren act to reduce the number of prostaglandins at the site of damaged tissue. This reduces pain and lowers inflammation.
Diclofenac is a COX-2 inihibitor that blocks specific enzymes (known as cyclooxygenase or COX) that are required to produce prostaglandins that produce pain and fever. By reducing the production of prostaglandins, COX-inhibitors like diclofenac effectively reduce inflammation and pain.Â
What forms of Voltaren can I buy from IsraelPharm?
We supply Voltaren in three different forms: gel, eye drops and tablets, and in various strengths and sizes.Â
Voltaren Emulgel containing diclofenac is applied externally to relieve pain, inflammation and joint stiffness. In the gel form, it is absorbed through the skin and not through the stomach, which avoids some of the side-effects of NSAIDs on gastric linings. It provides arthritis relief by blocking inflammation and not simply masking the pain, which is what analgesic gels and ointments do.
Voltaren Emulgel is available without prescription from IsraelPharm in several forms:
- Voltaren Emulgel extra strength – contains 2% diclofenac in a 150g tube
- Voltaren Emulgel – contains 1% diclofenac in a 50g tube
- Voltaren Emulgel – contains 1% diclofenac in a 100g tube
- Voltaren Emulgel – contains 1% diclofenac in a 150g tube
Voltaren Eye Drops are usually prescribed for use following cataract extraction and other refractive surgical procedures, where they reduce post-operative inflammation. They are also used as a treatment for allergic conjunctivitis and in the prevention and treatment of cystoid macular oedema. They are available only on prescription
Betaren is a form of Voltaren in tablet form (also called Abitren). It a contains higher dose of diclofenac targeting osteoarthritis and is available only on prescription.
