Rythmol / Profex / Rytmonorm (
generic name: propafenone) is a prescription medicine used to treat
serious heart rhythm disorders such as
atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, and certain types of ventricular arrhythmias.
Propafenone belongs to the class of medicines known as
Class IC antiarrhythmics. Propafenone works by slowing the electrical signals in the heart that cause abnormal rhythms. This stabilizes the heartbeat, helping it return to and remain in a
normal sinus rhythm. It can reduce palpitations, dizziness, shortness of breath, chest pain, and fainting associated with arrhythmias.
Propafenone is not used for every patient with arrhythmias. It is reserved for those with specific conditions, as its use requires careful monitoring. Treatment is usually long-term. More information is available at
MedlinePlus.
Usual dosage
It is important to follow the dosage instructions printed on the label of the box.
For most adults, the recommended starting dose is
150 mg every 8 hours (three times daily). The dose may be gradually increased under medical supervision to
225–300 mg every 8 hours, depending on the condition and patient response. In some cases, a sustained-release version is prescribed, typically
225–425 mg every 12 hours.
Propafenone should be taken with food to reduce stomach upset. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered unless it is close to the next scheduled dose.
Do not double dose to make up for a missed dose. Dosage adjustments may be necessary for patients with liver or kidney impairment, or when other heart medications are being used.
Important: continue treatment exactly as prescribed, even if symptoms improve, as stopping suddenly can worsen arrhythmias.
Standard storage
Store the tablets at
20-25 °C (68-77 °F), with allowable variation between 15-30 °C (59-86 °F). Keep away from moisture, heat, and direct light. Store in the original container with the lid tightly closed. Do not freeze.

The information leaflet that comes with the medication includes full information about possible side effects. Be sure to read and understand these, and if there are any questions, discuss them with a healthcare provider.
If a sudden allergic reaction occurs after taking Rytmonorm, such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat; difficulty breathing; hives; or severe rash, seek emergency care immediately.
Propafenone should only be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding if clearly needed and prescribed by a healthcare provider. The risks and benefits must be weighed carefully before use.
Most patients tolerate Rythmol / Profex / Rytmonorm without serious issues, but side effects can occur. Common side effects include:
- Dizziness
- Taste disturbances (metallic taste)
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Constipation
- Tiredness.
Less common but serious effects may include worsening arrhythmias, chest pain, shortness of breath, or fainting. Any severe or persistent symptoms should be promptly reported to a healthcare provider.
Propafenone is prescribed for the treatment of atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter, irregular rhythms in the upper chambers of the heart that can cause palpitations, weakness, and shortness of breath.
It is also used for ventricular arrhythmias, which are irregular rhythms in the lower chambers that can be dangerous and lead to fainting, chest pain, or cardiac arrest. By restoring a steady heart rhythm, propafenone helps reduce these symptoms and the risk of complications. It is typically used in patients who do not have severe structural heart disease, as safety must be carefully considered.
