Protopic cream (tacrolimus) has been shown to suppress inflammatory reactions in the skin. Severe eczema is thought to be partly caused by immune cells in the skin over-reacting to a stimulus and causing inflammation. Applying tacrolimus to the eczema suppresses these reactions in the skin, and improvement of the eczema is generally seen within a week of starting treatment.
Dosage
The ointment comes in two strengths – Protopic 0.03% and Protopic 0.1% ointment. The dose and regimen is decided by the prescribing doctor.
Children aged two and older usually get Protopic 0.03% twice each day, morning and evening, for a period of up to three weeks, then once each day to the affected region on the skin until the eczema has cleared. For adults aged 16 and older, the same regimen applies, with the stronger version.
