Prolensa (bromfenac) is prescribed to patients who are undergoing cataract surgery. Its action is to limit post-operative inflammation and to relieve pain. Bromfenac belongs to the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) group.

Usage

Only use Prolensa as prescribed by the doctor. The standard dose is one drop in the eye being operated on in the evening prior to surgery and once each day for 14 days post-surgery. Even if the pain or inflammation subsides, the full dose should be taken.

This text is for informational purposes only. Please consult a doctor or pharmacist before using any medication.

Read the information leaflet that comes with the medication.

Most people who use Prolensa do not experience any negative side effects. Doctors prescribe Prolensa because they assess that the benefits of such treatment outweigh any likely unwanted effects.

Very few side effects have been reported. There may be headaches, vitreous floaters, iritis, pain, or ocular
hypertension. These should clear up as soon as the drops are not used post-surgery.

Not all side effects are listed here. If these or other unlisted symptoms persist or worsen, consult a healthcare provider or pharmacist.

Prolensa only for use as directed by an ophthalmologist immediately before and after surgery for cataract removal.

  • What happens if you use too much Prolensa?
An overdose of Prolensa ophthalmic eye drops into the eyes is not dangerous, but if there is any discomfort, consult a doctor or pharmacist. However, if someone has swallowed a substantial amount of Prolensa, seek emergency medical attention.
  • Can Prolensa raise eye pressure?
Increased intraocular pressure has not been reported as a frequent side effect of bromfenac. The most common side effects are a sensation of grittiness in the eye, inflammation of the anterior chamber, headaches, vitreous floaters, pain, and blurred vision.
  • How do you use bromfenac?
The recommended method is to tilt the head back slightly, and tug the lower eyelid down with an index finger to form a small pouch. Position the bottle of eye drops upside-down without touching the surface of the eye, and gently squeeze the prescribed number of drops into the pouch. Blink once to spread the drops evenly, then leave the eye closed for 10–15 seconds.
  • How often can I use bromfenac?
Follow the doctor's instructions. The usual dose for Prolensa is one drop on the day prior to cataract surgery, and then once each day for two weeks.
