Nustendi (ezetimibe and bempedoic acid) is prescribed along with a healthy diet to lower cholesterol levels in the blood. High cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia) can lead to atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) which occurs when cholesterol, fat, and other substances build up in the walls of arteries. This forms hard structures called plaques which, over time, can block the arteries and cause heart disease, stroke, and other problems.
Ezetimibe inhibits intestinal cholesterol absorption. It differs from other drugs treating hypercholesterolemia because it does not affect the absorption of fat-soluble nutrients such as triglycerides, fat-soluble vitamins, or bile acids. Most of the newer treatments for high cholesterol combine ezetimibe with statins. However, Nustendi combines ezetimibe with bempedoic acid, which has a different mechanism of action. It targets the same biological pathway as statins, but does not have the negative effects that statins can have.

Nustendi is prescribed along with a low-fat diet to lower blood cholesterol. Cholesterol levels are measured in blood tests. A total cholesterol level below 200 mg/dL is safe, between 200 and 239 mg/dL is borderline high, and 240 mg/dL or higher is considered high.
