Lovaza (generic name: omega‑3‑acid ethyl esters) is a fish oil–derived medication used to lower very high triglyceride levels in adults. It supplies concentrated omega-3 fatty acids, primarily eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These fatty acids help reduce the amount of fat circulating in the blood, which can reduce the risk of complications related to elevated triglycerides.
The medication works by decreasing liver triglyceride production and may also increase triglyceride clearance from the bloodstream. By targeting triglycerides, Lovaza helps improve lipid balance and supports heart health, particularly in individuals who cannot control elevated triglycerides through diet alone.
Lovaza belongs to the pharmacological class of omega-3 fatty acid ethyl esters. It provides therapeutic levels of EPA and DHA that are higher than those found in standard dietary supplements. This concentrated form allows for precision dosing in adults with severe triglyceride elevations.
Dosage
It is important to follow the dosage instructions printed on the label of the box. Check with a doctor or pharmacist if there are any doubts regarding the proper dosage and treatment regimen.
The typical dosage of Lovaza is 4 grams per day, taken as two 1-gram capsules twice daily or four capsules once daily with meals. If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as remembered on the same day, unless the next dose is due; doses should not be doubled. Lovaza is intended as an adjunct to diet, so it is used alongside dietary changes aimed at reducing fat and calories.
Storage
Lovaza capsules should be stored at room temperature between 59-77°F (15-25°C), in a dry place and away from light. They must be kept in their original container, tightly closed.

If a sudden allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) occurs shortly after taking Lovaza, with symptoms like swelling of the face, tongue, or throat making it difficult to breathe or swallow, or there is wheezing, hives, rash, blistering, or peeling of the skin, call a doctor or 911 right away, or go to an emergency room immediately.
Most people who use Lovaza do not experience any adverse side effects. Doctors prescribe this medication because they assess the benefits of such treatment outweigh any likely unwanted effects.
Some of the side effects that have been reported include burping, indigestion, a fishy taste or aftertaste, stomach upset, and diarrhea. These effects usually lessen over time.
Not all side effects are listed here. If these or other unlisted symptoms persist or worsen, consult a healthcare provider or pharmacist.
Lovaza is used to treat severe hypertriglyceridemia, defined as triglyceride levels of 500 mg/dL or higher. High triglycerides can increase the risk of pancreatitis and are associated with heart disease. Lovaza helps bring triglyceride levels down, lowering these risks. It is not indicated for conditions such as heart failure, hypertension, or other fat disorders. Use is recommended when diet alone has not effectively lowered triglycerides. Its approved use is strictly for very high triglycerides in adults and not for general lipid management.
