Ilevro (generic name: nepafenac) is a member of the group of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It is prescribed to prevent and relieve pain and inflammation, and to reduce the risk of macular edema, after cataract surgery
Nepafenac blocks the action of prostaglandin H synthase (cyclooxygenase), which is an enzyme required for prostaglandin. Prostaglandins are responsible for causing pain, redness, inflammation in the eyes, so blocking prostaglandins provides relief in these conditions.
The common side effects of Ilevro include:
- Cloudiness of the cornea
- Deterioration of visual acuity
- Feeling of grittiness when blinking
- Elevated eye pressure
- Eyelids feel sticky
The less frequent side effects include:
- Swelling of the eye
- Dry eyes
- Eyelid crusting
- Eye discomfort, redness, pain, itching, sensitivity to light
- Tearing
- Vitreous detachment
Other side effects not directly related to the eyes include
- Headache
- High blood pressure
- Nausea or vomiting
- Sinus inflammation
These side effects should clear up on their own within a few days. If not, refer back to your prescribing healthcare provider or pharmacist.
Ilevro is prescribed for post-cataract cases for use in the first two weeks after surgery. There are no other indications or conditions for which it can be prescribed.
