Foradil / Oxis (generic name: formoterol fumarate) is an oral inhalation that helps manage wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness linked to asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).Â
Formoterol functions by targeting beta-2 receptors in the lungs. Activating these receptors by formoterol relaxes airway muscles, allowing them to open up. Conditions causing airway narrowing, such as asthma or COPD (like emphysema and chronic bronchitis), make airflow in and out of the lungs challenging. By widening the airways, formoterol facilitates breathing.
Dosage
A doctor will determine the correct dosage of Foradil. Do not exceed the prescribed dosage given by the doctor.Â
The recommended dose is usually one capsule twice daily, with a maximum of two capsules daily. These capsules are designed for use only with the inhaler. They should be removed from the blister pack just before use. The capsules are meant for inhalation through the inhaler, not for swallowing.
One capsule should be taken at least 15 minutes before physical activity to prevent exercise-induced asthma attacks. The doctor may suggest using two capsules if needed to prevent shortness of breath or wheezing.
NOTE:
Foradil is not intended for relieving acute asthma or bronchospasm attacks and doesn’t replace a rescue inhaler like
Ventolin.
Storage
Avoid storing Foradil above 25°C / 77°F. Store it in its original packaging to protect it from moisture. For more tips on how to store medication properly, read this article: Conquer the Chaos: Top Tips for Safe and Organized Medicine Storage.
FAQ

Can asthma be 100% cured?
Asthma is not curable but can be controlled with the right treatment plan. Some children may eventually grow out of asthma as they age.

Not all side effects are listed here. If these or other unlisted symptoms persist or worsen, consult a healthcare provider or pharmacist.
Asthma: Foradil is recommended for asthma in individuals already using inhaled corticosteroids and needing a long-acting beta-agonist alongside it. Asthma symptoms include breathlessness, chest tightness, wheezing, disrupted sleep, and worsened coughing or wheezing during respiratory infections.Â
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): Foradil prevents and treats bronchoconstriction in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Common signs of COPD include breathlessness during physical activity, a chronic productive cough often mistaken for a smoker’s cough, regular chest infections, and ongoing wheezing. The primary test for COPD is spirometry, a lung function test measuring how much air the patient breathes out.
