Bepreve (generic name: bepotastine besilate) can be prescribed to treat allergic conjunctivitis, a condition that affects the eyes when they come into contact with allergens such as pollen, dust, or animal dander. This medicine is supplied as sterile ophthalmic eye drops and is intended for use directly in the eyes. It is commonly used when allergy symptoms are seasonal or triggered by specific environmental exposures. Bepotastine besilate belongs to a group of medicines known as antihistamines. Histamine is a natural substance released by the body during an allergic reaction. In the eyes, histamine can cause redness, itching, watering, and swelling. By blocking the action of histamine, this medicine helps reduce these uncomfortable symptoms and improves eye comfort during allergy episodes. This medication works locally at the surface of the eye. After application, it begins to act on histamine receptors in the eye tissues, helping to calm the allergic response. Because it is applied directly where symptoms occur, it is designed to relieve eye-related allergy symptoms without acting throughout the whole body. Bepreve should not be used to treat contact lens-related irritation, or while wearing contact lenses.  The preservative in Bepreve may be absorbed by soft contact lenses. Bepreve is used as part of allergy management for people whose main symptoms involve the eyes. It does not treat infections or eye conditions caused by bacteria or viruses. The medicine is typically used during periods when allergy symptoms are present and may be taken for short or extended periods, depending on individual needs and healthcare guidance.

Dosage

The usual dose of this medicine is determined by a healthcare professional and should be followed exactly as prescribed. This medication is for use in the eyes only and should not be swallowed or injected. Remove contact lenses prior to using Bepreve. Lenses may be reinserted after 10 minutes following administration of the drops. Bepreve is typically used twice daily, with doses spaced several hours apart. It should be applied at around the same times each day to help maintain consistent symptom relief. When using the eye drops:
  • Wash hands before and after use
  • Tilt the head back and apply the prescribed number of drops into the affected eye(s)
  • Avoid touching the dropper tip to the eye or any surface
If a dose is missed, it should be used as soon as remembered. If it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, the missed dose should be skipped and the regular schedule resumed. Double dosing is not allowedand should never be used to make up for a missed application. This medicine may be used for as long as allergy symptoms persist, unless otherwise directed. Use should stop if advised by a healthcare professional or if the medicine is no longer needed.

Storage

Bepreve should be stored at room temperature, between 15°-25°C (59°-77°F). The bottle should be kept tightly closed when not in use to protect the contents from contamination. The medicine should be protected from excessive light and moisture. It must not be frozen or stored in very hot conditions. Always keep this product out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use the eye drops after the expiry date printed on the bottle and outer packaging. Once opened, the bottle should be used only for the period recommended in the patient information leaflet and then safely discarded, even if some solution remains. Unused or expired medicine should not be disposed of in household waste or wastewater.

This text is for informational purposes only. Please consult a doctor or pharmacist before using this medication.

The patient information leaflet that is included with the product includes full information about the correct usage, storage and possible side effects. Be sure to read and understand these, and if there are any questions, discuss these with a healthcare provider or pharmacist before starting treatment.

Common side effects may include:

  • eye irritation
  • an unusual taste in the mouth after use, headache
  • mild redness of the eyes.

Less common side effects can include dry eyes, blurred vision shortly after application, or discomfort in the eye.

Cautions:

If a sudden allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) occurs shortly after taking Bepreve, with symptoms like swelling of the face, tongue, or throat making it difficult to breathe or swallow, or there is wheezing, hives, rash, blistering, or peeling of the skin, call a doctor or 911 right away, or go to an emergency room immediately.

Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or might get pregnant, should talk to a healthcare provider before using Bepreve.

Not all the known side effects of Bepreve are listed here. If these or other unlisted symptoms persist or worsen, consult a healthcare provider or pharmacist.

Bepreve is approved for the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis, an eye condition caused by exposure to allergens. This condition is not infectious and does not spread from person to person. It occurs when the eyes react to substances in the environment that trigger an immune response.

Common symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis include:

  • Itching or burning sensations in the eyes
Redness of the white part of the eye
    Watery or teary eyes
Swelling around the eyes or eyelids
A feeling of irritation or discomfort

These symptoms can affect one or both eyes and may vary in intensity. They often worsen during allergy seasons or after exposure to known triggers such as pollen, pet hair, or dust mites.

By reducing the effects of histamine in the eyes, this medicine helps relieve itching and redness, making daily activities more comfortable during allergy flare-ups.

  • Temporary blurred vision may occur immediately after applying the drops. This usually clears within a short time. Activities that require clear vision should be avoided until eyesight returns to normal.
