Efudex / Efudix Cream (generic name: fluorouracil) is a topical medication used to treat skin growths and pre-cancerous conditions such as actinic keratoses and superficial basal cell carcinomas.
Fluorouracil belongs to the class of anti-cancer agents known as pyrimidine analogues, which act by mimicking the building blocks of DNA. When applied to the skin, fluorouracil interferes with the synthesis of DNA in rapidly growing abnormal cells, causing them to die and eventually slough off. This interference stops abnormal skin cells from multiplying and causes them to die, allowing healthy skin to regenerate.

Most people who use Efudix / Efudex do not experience any adverse side effects. Doctors prescribe this medication because they assess the benefits of such treatment outweigh any likely unwanted effects.
Some of the side effects that have been reported include redness, swelling, burning, itching, crusting, erosion, and discomfort in treated skin areas. These responses are expected and show that the cream is working. The skin may peel or form scabs during treatment.
Occasionally, serious reactions can occur, such as ulceration, blistering, extensive inflammation beyond treatment areas, or severe pain. Patients should seek immediate medical care if they experience persistent burning, swelling, fever, or signs of infection (e.g., oozing, increased redness).
Not all side effects are listed here. If these or other unlisted symptoms persist or worsen, consult a healthcare provider or pharmacist.
Efudex Cream is approved for treating actinic keratoses, which appear as rough, scaly patches caused by prolonged sun exposure. Common symptoms include dry, rough texture, redness, itching, or burning sensation on affected skin. These lesions have the potential to develop into squamous cell carcinoma, making treatment important.
The cream is also used for superficial basal cell carcinoma (BCC). BCC typically appears as pink or flesh-colored patches that may bleed or remain open, often occurring on sun-exposed areas like the face. Treatment with Efudix helps destroy these abnormal cells without the need for surgery in certain cases.
Off-label use can include treating other superficial skin cancers or sun-damaged areas. Patients using Efudex should receive regular skin checks from a dermatologist to monitor treatment effects and detect any new or recurring lesions.
