Hydroxyurea 500 mg capsules (also known internationally as hydroxycarbamide) are a cytotoxic antineoplastic agent used in the treatment of several hematologic and oncologic conditions. The medication works by inhibiting DNA synthesis, which slows or stops the proliferation of rapidly dividing cells.
Hydroxyurea is widely used in the management of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), polycythemia vera, essential thrombocythemia, and certain head and neck cancers. It is also commonly prescribed for sickle cell disease, where it helps increase fetal hemoglobin (HbF) levels, reducing the frequency of painful vaso-occlusive crises and the need for blood transfusions.
Each capsule contains 500 mg of hydroxyurea for oral administration. Treatment and dosage are individualized based on the patient’s condition, weight, and response to therapy. Because hydroxyurea can affect bone marrow function, regular monitoring of blood counts is required during therapy.
Hydroxyurea capsules should be taken exactly as prescribed by a healthcare professional. Patients should follow all handling and safety precautions, as the medication is a potent cytotoxic agent.
