Mezavant (generic name: mesalamine) can be prescribed to treat inflammation of the large intestine (colon) in adults diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, either during an active flare or to prevent recurrence once the disease is in remission. It belongs to the pharmacological class of aminosalicylates, which act by working directly on the lining of the gut to reduce inflammation. The tablet is formulated to release the active substance gradually along the colon, allowing treatment of the full length of the large bowel.
Because mesalamine stays mostly within the bowel rather than being absorbed widely into the body, Mezavant offers a targeted approach to managing symptoms such as bloody diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, and the frequent urgent need to use the toilet. By providing a once-daily, prolonged-release tablet, the medicine supports a maintenance strategy, helping to keep the colon calmer day to day and lowering the risk of another flare, rather than treating only short-term symptoms when they appear. Over time, consistent use of Mezavant helps maintain remission, reduce the frequency of recurrences, and maintain quality of life for people living with ulcerative colitis.
It is important to follow the dosage instructions printed on the label of the box. Check with a doctor or pharmacist if there are any doubts regarding the proper dosage and treatment regimen.
For adults treating an acute episode of ulcerative colitis, the typical dose of Mezavant may be 2.4 g to 4.8 g once daily (for example, two to four tablets of the 1.2 g strength) depending on the severity.
Once the flare has resolved, the dose is often reduced to 2.4 g once daily to help prevent recurrence.
Tablets should be swallowed whole with food, at approximately the same time each day; they must not be crushed, chewed or split because the coating controls where in the bowel the medicine is released.
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered unless it is nearly time for the next dose; do not take a double dose to catch up.
The doctor may adjust the dose downward after symptoms are well controlled, to the lowest effective level for maintenance.
Store at room temperature, typically about 20-25 °C (68-77 °F).
Avoid exposure to excessive heat or moisture.
Keep the tablets in their original packaging until use, to protect from moisture and light.
Keep out of reach of children.

Common side effects:
headache
stomach pain, bloating or diarrhoea
flatulence (passing wind)
nausea
rash or skin itchiness
Serious side effects requiring immediate action:
sudden severe stomach pain, persistent bloody diarrhoea or fever (may signal a serious gut reaction)
unexplained bruising or bleeding, or any sign of kidney or liver problems
allergic-type reactions such as swelling of the face, lips or throat or widespread skin blistering.
Not all side effects are listed here. If these or other unlisted symptoms persist or worsen, consult a healthcare provider or pharmacist.
Mezavant is prescribed to treat ulcerative colitis, a condition in which the lining of the large intestine becomes inflamed and injured. It is used in both active and maintenance phases of the illness.
Typical symptoms for active ulcerative colitis include:
bloody diarrhoea (frequent urgent passages of stool mixed with blood)
abdominal cramps (pain or pressure in the lower belly)
urgency to use the toilet, possibly at night
feeling of incomplete bowel emptying or a need to rush
When the lining of the bowel is inflamed, these symptoms result from damage and swelling. Mezavant works by reducing that inflammation, allowing healing and symptom relief.
Once the flare is under control, Mezavant is also used to prevent recurrence of ulcerative colitis, helping maintain remission, lower the risk of future flares, and support longer-term digestive health. In this use, symptoms may be minimal or absent, but the treatment remains important to keep the colon stable.
