Zithromax/Azenil/Zeto (generic name: azithromycin) belongs to a group of medicines known as macrolide antibiotics, which help fight bacteria in the body. This medication treats various infections caused by bacteria, including respiratory, skin, ear infections, and some sexually transmitted infections. Zithromax is usually taken once daily on an empty stomach for short periods.

Dosage

Always follow the doctor’s instructions when using this medicine. If you are unsure about the dosage or treatment plan, consult a doctor or pharmacist. The doctor will determine the dosage and treatment plan.  Capsules should be taken one hour before or two hours after a meal. Take the capsule whole; do not open or disperse it, as this could affect how well the medicine works. Even if feeling better, do not stop taking the drug without consulting the doctor. Do not skip doses of Zithromax or stop the treatment prematurely. This may cause the treatment to be less effective and make it harder to treat the infection if it returns. Finishing the complete treatment also helps reduce the risk of bacteria becoming resistant to the medication.

Storage

Store this medication away from the reach of infants and children in temperatures below 25˚C/77˚F. Please read our friendly tips on handling medicine safely.

Most people who use Zithromax do not experience any adverse side effects. Doctors prescribe this medication because they assess the benefits of such treatment outweigh any likely unwanted effects.

If after taking Zithromax, a sudden allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) occurs, with symptoms like swelling of the face, tongue, or throat making it difficult to breathe or swallow, or there is wheezing, hives, rash, blistering, or peeling of the skin, call a doctor or 911 right away, or go to an emergency room immediately.

Common side effects of Azenil may include loose stools or diarrhea, nausea, stomach ache, throwing up, irritation in the vagina, skin rash, stomach upset, and headaches.

Not all side effects are listed here. If these or other unlisted symptoms persist or worsen, consult a healthcare provider or pharmacist.

Various bacterial infections: Zithromax may be used to treat respiratory, skin, ear, and sexually transmitted infections. For diagnosis, a bacteria culture test can identify if a bacterial infection is present. The test can be done on blood, stool, urine, skin, mucus, or spinal fluid samples. It helps a doctor determine the cause of an infection and the best treatment. Symptoms of a bacterial infection can vary but may include fever, feeling tired, swollen lymph nodes, headache, and nausea.

  • Should you avoid the sun when taking azithromycin?
With azithromycin, there may be an increased risk of sunburn. Limit sun exposure and avoid tanning beds. Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen outdoors and wear protective clothing.
  • How can you tell if an infection is viral or bacterial?
Understanding the cause of an infection can be tricky since viral and bacterial infections lead to similar symptoms. A doctor might require a urine, stool, or blood sample or a swab from the nose or throat to identify the type of infection present.
  • Can alcohol stop antibiotics from working?
Alcohol doesn't usually weaken antibiotics, but drinking alcohol, especially in excess, can raise the risk of certain side effects.
