Trulicity is not a type of insulin. It is a GLP-1 receptor agonist that works by helping your own body release insulin when you eat and your blood sugar is high. It also helps prevent your liver from making too much sugar. Unlike insulin, it has a lower risk of causing low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) when used on its own, because its action is dependent on your glucose levels.

Trulicity may lead to weight loss in some individuals with type 2 diabetes. The amount of weight lost can vary significantly from person to person. Weight loss is a common side effect, partly because the medication can decrease appetite and slow down stomach emptying, making you feel full longer. However, Trulicity is not officially a weight-loss drug. It should be used as part of a comprehensive diabetes management plan that includes diet and exercise.

Trulicity is designed for convenience and is taken just once a week. You should administer your injection on the same day each week to maintain stable levels of the drug in your body. It can be taken at any time of day, regardless of when you eat your meals. If you need to change your weekly injection day, you can do so as long as your last dose was taken at least 3 days before.

Trulicity commonly causes side effects related to the digestive system. The most frequently reported issues include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and a decreased appetite. For many people, these side effects are most noticeable when first starting the medication and tend to lessen over time as the body adjusts. If these symptoms are severe or do not go away, you should speak with your healthcare provider.

Trulicity has a flexible dosing schedule if you miss a dose. If there are at least 3 days (72 hours) until your next scheduled dose, you should take the missed dose as soon as possible. If there are fewer than 3 days remaining, you should skip the missed dose and simply take your next dose on your regularly scheduled day. Do not take two doses of Trulicity at the same time.

Trulicity should be injected subcutaneously (under the skin) in your abdomen, thigh, or the back of your upper arm. To prevent skin irritation or lumps, it is important to rotate the injection site with each weekly dose. You should not inject into the exact same spot every time. The Trulicity pen is designed for easy self-injection, and your doctor or pharmacist can show you the correct technique.

Trulicity pens must be stored in the refrigerator at a temperature between 36°F to 46°F (2°C to 8°C). Do not freeze the pens, and if a pen has been frozen, you must not use it. If needed, you can store an individual pen at room temperature (below 86°F or 30°C) for up to 14 days. Keep the pens in their original carton to protect them from light until you are ready to use one.

Trulicity can be used by people who drink alcohol, but it is wise to do so in moderation. Alcohol can affect your blood sugar levels, causing them to go either too high or too low, which can complicate diabetes management. It may also worsen certain side effects like nausea or increase the risk of pancreatitis. Always discuss your alcohol consumption with your doctor so they can provide personalized advice.

Trulicity begins to work to lower blood sugar after the first dose, but it may take several weeks to experience the full effect. The medication has a long-lasting action, which is why it is only taken once a week. You may not feel the medication working, but its effects on blood sugar control and A1c levels are typically measured by your doctor over a period of 2 to 3 months.

Trulicity has a boxed warning from the FDA regarding a possible risk of thyroid C-cell tumors. In animal studies, dulaglutide caused these tumors, but it is not known if Trulicity causes them in humans. Therefore, you should not use Trulicity if you or a family member has ever had medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). Report any neck lump or hoarseness to your doctor.

Trulicity may not be safe for use during pregnancy, as its effects on an unborn baby are not well studied. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, you should discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is also not known if Trulicity passes into breast milk. Your doctor can help you decide the best way to manage your diabetes while pregnant or breastfeeding.

Trulicity is often prescribed to be used in combination with other diabetes medications, including metformin. Using Trulicity with metformin can provide a more powerful effect on lowering blood sugar than using either drug alone. Your healthcare provider will determine the best combination of medications for your specific needs and may adjust dosages to optimize your glycemic control and minimize potential side effects.
