Singulair (montelukast) is used to prevent asthma attacks in adults and children as young as 12 months old and to relieve runny nose and sneezing caused by allergies in adults and children as young as six months old. Montelukast works by blocking the natural substance leukotriene that may cause or worsen asthma and allergies. It allows for easier breathing by reducing swelling and inflammation of the airways.
Singulair is not a steroid or an antihistamine. It is a leukotriene receptor antagonist. It is often prescribed together with a steroid or antihistamine to treat asthma and allergic rhinitis. It does not work immediately and should not be used to treat sudden asthma attacks or other breathing problems. A rescue inhaler such as
Ventolin should be used during an attack.
Dosage
Singulair comes in four forms: Singulair 4 mg Sprinkles for Kiddies, Singulair 4 mg Chewable Tablets for pre-school kids, Singulair 5 mg Chewable Tablets and Singulair 5 mg Chewable Tablets for Adults.
Take the dose as prescribed. Try to remember to always take Singulair at night.

Singulair is used regularly to prevent wheezing and shortness of breath caused by asthma and to reduce the number of asthma attacks. Montelukast is also used before exercise to prevent breathing problems during exercise (bronchospasm). It is not meant to treat acute attacks, which require a rescue inhaler.
It can help decrease the number of times anyone suffering from asthma and allergic rhinitis needs to use a rescue inhaler. It is also used to relieve hay fever symptoms and allergic rhinitis, such as sneezing and stuffy, runny, and itchy nose.
