Rinaspray Nasal Spray (generic name: ipratropium) is an anticholinergic medication used for the relief of runny nose (rhinorrhea) caused by allergic and nonallergic perennial rhinitis. It belongs to the parasympatholytic drug class, which works by blocking the effects of acetylcholine on the nasal glands. This reduces nasal secretions without significantly affecting congestion, sneezing, or postnasal drip. Each metered spray delivers a precise dose of ipratropium bromide 21 mcg in a mild saline solution. Because ipratropium is a quaternary ammonium compound, it does not cross into the brain easily and produces fewer systemic side effects compared to similar medicines. Rinaspray is intended for nasal use only and should never be sprayed into the eyes or swallowed. Used as directed, it can help improve comfort by reducing persistent nasal discharge throughout the day. This nasal spray is safe for adults and children aged six years and older. It is commonly used year-round for chronic runny nose caused by conditions like dust or mold allergies or nonallergic triggers such as weather changes. The medication must be used regularly for best effect and should not be shared with others.

Dosage

It is important to follow the dosage instructions printed on the label of the box. Check with a doctor or pharmacist if there are any doubts regarding the proper dosage and treatment regimen. The recommended dose of Rinaspray Nasal Spray is two sprays in each nostril, used two or three times daily (total 168–252 mcg/day). Before first use, the spray pump must be primed by pressing it seven times. If unused for more than 24 hours, the pump should be primed again with two sprays, or seven sprays if unused for over seven days. Patients are advised to avoid spraying in or around their eyes. Patients who experience eye pain, blurred vision, excessive nasal dryness, or episodes of nasal bleeding should contact their doctor immediately. To ensure proper dosing, patients are advised to not alter the size of the nasal spray opening. Wash hands after use.

Storage

Store Rinaspray Nasal Spray at room temperature, between 20 -25 °C (68-77 °F). Keep the bottle upright and tightly closed when not in use. Avoid freezing and keep away from excessive heat or moisture.  Store the medicine out of reach of children. Dispose of the bottle responsibly when empty or after the expiration date. If in any doubt, consult our blog on safe medicine management.

This text is for informational purposes only. Please consult a doctor or pharmacist before using any medication.

The information leaflet that comes with the medication includes full information about the possible side effects. Be sure to read and understand these, and if there are any questions, discuss these with a healthcare provider or pharmacist before starting treatment.

Cautions

If a sudden allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) occurs shortly after using Rinaspray Nasal Spray, with symptoms like swelling of the face, tongue, or throat making it difficult to breathe or swallow, or there is wheezing, hives, rash, blistering, or peeling of the skin, call a doctor or 911 right away, or go to an emergency room immediately.

Pregnant women should not be using Rinaspray Nasal Spray unless this has been discussed with a healthcare provider, as no testing has been conducted as to whether it might harm the unborn baby or pose a risk of miscarriage. Rinaspray Nasal Spray may pass into breast milk, and mothers should consult with a doctor if already feeding or planning to feed an infant.

Most people who use Rinaspray Nasal Spray do not experience any adverse side effects. Doctors prescribe this medication because they assess the benefits of such treatment outweigh any likely unwanted effects.

Some of the side effects that have been reported include:

  • Nasal dryness
  • Mild nosebleeds (epistaxis)
  • Headache
  • Blurring of vision
  • Dizziness

Since visual disturbances or dizziness may occur after each dose, users should be warned about engaging in activities requiring balance and visual acuity such as driving a car or operating appliances and heavy machinery.

Not all side effects are listed here. If these or other unlisted symptoms persist or worsen, consult a healthcare provider.

Rinaspray Nasal Spray is used to control rhinorrhea (runny nose) caused by both allergic perennial rhinitis and nonallergic perennial rhinitis.

  • Allergic perennial rhinitis happens when the nasal passages are irritated year‑round by triggers like dust mites, mold, or pet dander.
  • Nonallergic perennial rhinitis causes similar symptoms but is not linked to allergies. It may be triggered by irritants, temperature changes, or underlying sensitivity of nasal glands.

This spray does not relieve nasal congestion, sneezing, or postnasal drip, but it can significantly reduce excessive nasal secretions.

Clinical studies show the medication begins to work quickly, sometimes on the first day, and may continue to improve symptoms with regular use.

It is approved for adults and children 6 years and older.

Rinaspray is particularly helpful for people with year‑round runny nose who do not get relief from typical allergy sprays or antihistamines. Because the medication works locally in the nose, it causes fewer body‑wide side effects and can be a good option for those who cannot tolerate other treatments for chronic runny nose.

  • Rinaspray Nasal Spray is used to relieve runny nose caused by allergic or nonallergic perennial rhinitis. It works directly in the nose to reduce secretions but does not treat congestion or sneezing.
