Nurtec contains the active ingredient rimegepant and is a calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor agonist. Nurtec is available as oral tablets and is indicated as a preventative treatment for episodic migraines and an acute treatment for migraine attacks in adults. Dosage: Standard dosage of Nurtec:
  • For the treatment of migraine attacks, it is advised to take one dose – one tablet. Do not take more than one tablet within 24 hours. The influence of taking more than 18 doses of Nurtec within 30 days is unknown and, therefore, is not advised.
  • For the preventative treatment of episodic migraines, taking one tablet every other day is the common treatment.
Regardless, this medication should be taken according to a doctor’s or healthcare provider’s instructions.

Side effects may include:

  • Nausea
  • Indigestion 
  • Stomach pain

If an allergic reaction is experienced while taking Nurtec, stop taking this medication immediately and console a doctor or healthcare provider.

Allergic reaction symptoms may include:

  • Swelling of the face, mouth, tongue and neck
  • Trouble breathing
  • Rash or redness of the skin

Nurtec is an antimigraine medication that belongs to the calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor agonist therapeutic group. This medication is indicated as a preventative treatment for episodic migraines and as an acute treatment of migraines in adults.

 

  • What does the drug Nurtec do?
    Nurtec is a calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor agonist that blocks CGRP receptors. It helps treat migraines (with or without aura) in adults and prevent episodic migraines.
  • Is Nurtec a triptan?
    No is not a tripan. Nurtec is a CGRP receptor agonist, while triptans are a group of medications called 5HT1-receptor agonists. However, they both can be used for the treatment of migraines.
  • Is it OK to take Nurtec every day?
    When taking Nurtec as a preventative treatment for episodic migraines, it is advised to take one dose every other day. For the acute treatment of a migraine when it occurs, one dose can be taken once a day. Do not exceed the use of more than one tablet in 24 hours or more than 18 tablets in 30 days.
  • Does Nurtec have bad side effects?
    Nurtec side effects vary from patient to patient, as with all medications. The most common side effects may include nausea and stomach pain, while the most serious can be an allergic reaction, in which case a doctor should be contacted immediately.
  • Can Nurtec cause weight gain?
    Nurtec was not reported to cause weight gain in the clinical trials, and weight gain is not listed as a side effect.
