Monoprost (generic name: latanoprost) is an ophthalmic solution used to reduce elevated pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure) in adults diagnosed with open‑angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. It helps protect the optic nerve from damage caused by high eye pressure-conditions that can lead to vision loss if untreated. Monoprost is formulated as a preservative‑free, single‑dose eye drop, delivering latanoprost directly without added preservatives to reduce irritation risk. Monoprost works by increasing the outflow of aqueous humour (eye fluid) through prostanoid FP receptor activation in the eye. This helps the eye drain fluid more effectively and lowers pressure. The mechanism provides sustained reduction in eye pressure over 24 hours with once‑daily dosing in the evening. It belongs to the pharmacological class of prostaglandin analogue ocular hypotensive agents. As a latanoprost-based, preservative-free alternative, it offers similar pressure-lowering efficacy compared to preserved latanoprost brands while minimizing side effects like eye redness or irritation associated with preservatives.

Dosage

Follow the prescribing doctor’s dosage instructions which are printed on the label. Usually, one single‑dose container (50 µg/mL latanoprost) is applied once daily in the evening, as one drop into each affected eye. Only one administration per day is recommended to maintain effectiveness and avoid reduced therapeutic benefit from more frequent dosing. If other eye drops are used, wait at least 5 minutes between them. Contact lenses must be removed before administration and may be reinserted after 15 minutes. Single-dose containers must be discarded immediately after use to maintain sterility

Storage

Single‑dose containers should be stored at room temperature in their original sealed sachet, protected from moisture and light. There is no need for refrigeration or freezing. Do not reuse containers once opened, and discard all unused solution from a container immediately after use to prevent contamination.

Most people who use Monoprost do not experience any adverse side effects. Doctors prescribe this medication because they assess the benefits of such treatment outweigh any likely unwanted effects.

Some of the side effects that have been reported include eye redness (conjunctival hyperemia), blurred vision, burning or stinging upon instillation, itching, foreign body sensation, and punctate keratitis (tiny surface corneal irritation). These occur typically improve with continued use.

There is a risk of bacterial keratitis if sterility is compromised. Avoid touching the dropper tip to the eye and discard containers immediately after use

Not all side effects are listed here. If these or other unlisted symptoms persist or worsen, consult a healthcare provider or pharmacist.

Monoprost is used to treat elevated intraocular pressure associated with open‑angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. In these conditions, high pressure within the eye can damage the optic nerve and lead to vision loss. By lowering pressure through increased fluid drainage, Monoprost helps reduce the risk of optic nerve damage. It’s use is approved only for adults.

  • Monoprost begins to lower eye pressure within 3 to 4 hours of instillation, with maximum pressure reduction reached in about 8 to 12 hours. Consistent once‑daily evening use helps maintain stable eye pressure. Eye doctors typically monitor intraocular pressure after a few weeks to confirm effectiveness.
