What is Mavenclad?

Mavenclad is a prescription oral medication used to treat relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS) in adults. This includes relapsing-remitting disease (RRMS) and active secondary progressive disease (SPMS). It is generally recommended for patients who have not responded well to, or cannot tolerate, other MS drugs. Mavenclad is not a daily medication. It is a short-course therapy that is given in two treatment courses over two years. This unique dosing schedule provides a lasting effect on the immune system.

How does Mavenclad work?

Mavenclad works by selectively targeting and reducing the number of certain white blood cells called lymphocytes (B cells and T cells). In multiple sclerosis, these immune cells mistakenly attack the protective myelin sheath that covers nerve fibers in the brain and spinal cord. By temporarily lowering the lymphocyte count, Mavenclad reduces this autoimmune attack. This action helps to decrease the frequency of MS relapses. It also slows down the worsening of disability that can occur with the disease. The effect on the immune system is long-lasting, even after the short treatment courses are complete.

Who is Mavenclad for?

Mavenclad is designed for adults diagnosed with highly active relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis. This includes patients with relapsing-remitting MS and active secondary progressive MS. Because of its safety profile, it is typically used in patients who have tried another MS medication that did not work well enough. It may also be an option for those who could not tolerate other treatments. It is not recommended for patients with clinically isolated syndrome. Patients considering Mavenclad should have a thorough discussion with their neurologist to weigh the benefits and potential risks.

Dosage and administration

Mavenclad is taken orally as tablets in a unique short-course schedule. The entire treatment is completed over two years. Each year involves one treatment course. A course consists of two treatment weeks, separated by about one month. In each treatment week, a patient takes tablets for 4 or 5 consecutive days. The total number of tablets depends on the patient’s body weight. After the second treatment course in year two, no further Mavenclad treatment is required in years three and four. This specific dosing regimen must be followed precisely under a doctor’s supervision.

Side effects

Mavenclad can cause side effects, some of which may be serious. The most common side effect is a decrease in white blood cells known as lymphopenia. This can increase your risk of infections. Other common side effects include headaches, upper respiratory tract infections, and cold sores. Serious risks associated with Mavenclad include an increased risk of certain cancers, serious infections like tuberculosis and hepatitis, and potential liver injury. Your doctor will monitor you closely with blood tests before, during, and after treatment to manage these risks. It is crucial to report any new or worsening symptoms to your healthcare provider immediately.
