Lotemax is indicated for the treatment of steroid-responsive inflammatory conditions of the palpebral and bulbar conjunctiva, cornea, and anterior segment of the globe, such as allergic conjunctivitis, acne, rosacea, superficial punctate keratitis, herpes zoster keratitis, iritis, cyclitis, and selected infective conjunctivides, when the inherent hazard of steroid use is accepted to obtain an advisable diminution in edema and inflammation.
Lotemax (loteprednol) is prescribed to reduce swelling of the eyes caused by ocular surgery, allergies, certain viral infections like ocular rosacea and herpes zoster, as well as other eye conditions. It should only be used as directed by a healthcare provider.
Loteprednol is a corticosteroid. Its function is to reduce inflammation. It does not kill bacteria. It works by blocking some of the chemicals that cause inflammation, itching, and redness.
Lotemax should only be used as prescribed. The standard dosage is to apply one drop to an affected eye three times a day. When used for post-surgery treatment, drops should be started 24 hours after surgery and continue for two weeks after. All other usage must be according to the doctor’s directions.
Loteprednol may be prescribed for short-term treatment of dry eye disease. Long-term use can cause glaucoma, so the length of treatment recommended by the prescribing doctor must be adhered to
Users should not stop treatment with loteprednol without consulting their doctor. Some conditions may worsen if the drug is stopped suddenly. The dosage may need to be gradually decreased.
The four main side effects of corticosteroids like loteprednol in ocular treatments are steroid-induced glaucoma, cataract formation, delayed wound healing, and increased susceptibility to infection.
