Janumet®/Januet® (sitagliptin and metformin) works in cooperation with proper diet and exercise to control high blood sugar in patients with type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes. Controlling high blood sugar can help prevent kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs, and sexual function problems, as well as risk for heart attack or stroke. This drug should not be used in patients with type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes.

The most common side effects of JANUMET include:
stuffy or runny nose and sore throat.
upper respiratory infection.
low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) when used in combination with certain medications, such as a sulfonylurea or insulin.
gas, upset stomach, indigestion.
weakness.
nausea and vomiting.
headache.
diarrhea.

JANUMET is indicated, as an adjunct to diet and exercise, to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. JANUMET XR is indicated, as an adjunct to diet and exercise, to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
