Dosage

For adults, the recommended oral dose of Imitrex is 25 mg, 50 mg, or 100 mg as prescribed, taken as a single dose. If the migraine symptoms persist or return after initial relief, a second dose may be taken at least 2 hours after the first dose. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 200 mg within a 24-hour period. Imitrex tablets should be swallowed whole with water or another fluid. They can be taken with or without food. It is advisable to take the medication as soon as possible after the onset of migraine symptoms, although it is still effective if taken at a later stage during the migraine attack. Imitrex is intended for use on an as-needed basis for the acute treatment of migraines and is not prescribed as a regular daily medication. Therefore, the concept of a “missed dose” does not apply. Patients should take Imitrex only when they experience a migraine attack, following the dosing guidelines provided by their healthcare provider.
